A Study of History Teachers Job Satisfaction and Professional Burnout Levels With Regards To Some Variables: Sample for Province of Van

Abstract

Bu araĢtırmanın amacı, Van ili merkezindeki ortaöğretim okullarında çalıĢan tarih öğretmenlerinin iĢ doyum ve mesleki tükenmiĢlik düzeylerini belirleyerek bazı demografik değiĢkenler (cinsiyet, yaĢ, medeni durum, eğitim düzeyi, meslek süresi, kurum süresi ve ücret) açısından farklılaĢıp farklılaĢmadığına bakmaktır. AraĢtırmaya Van ili merkezinde yer alan 38 ortaöğretim okulunda bulunan 92 tarih öğretmeninden 91'ine ulaĢılmıĢtır. Geçerli bulunan 90 anket değerlendirmeye alınmıĢtır. Tarih öğretmenlerinin iĢ doyum düzeylerini ölçmek için Minnesota ĠĢ Doyum Ölçeği kullanılarak katılımcıların içsel doyum, dıĢsal doyum ve genel doyum düzeyleri belirlenmiĢtir. AraĢtırmada kullanılan bir diğer ölçek olan Maslach TükenmiĢlik Ölçeği ile tarih öğretmenlerinin duygusal tükenme, duyarsızlaĢma, kiĢisel baĢarı ve genel tükenmiĢlik düzeyleri belirlenmiĢtir. Ayrıca araĢtırmada KiĢisel Bilgi Formu kullanılmıĢtır. AraĢtırmada elde edilen verilerin analizi için 'SPSS 15.0' paket programı kullanılmıĢtır. Verilerin çözümlenmesinde ise 't-testi, tek yönlü varyans analizi (ANOVA), korelasyon ve Tukey HSD' test tekniklerinden yararlanılmıĢtır. Tarih öğretmenlerinin genel iĢ doyumları 'yüksek' seviyede bulunurken mesleki tükenmiĢlik düzeyleri 'orta' seviyede bulunmuĢtur. ĠĢ doyumu ile bazı demografik değiĢkenler arasında yapılan incelemede cinsiyet değiĢkeninde anlamlı bir fark bulunurken, hem iĢ doyumu hem de tükenmiĢlik düzeyi ile bazı demografik değiĢkenler arasında yapılan incelemede yaĢ, medeni durum, eğitim düzeyi, meslek süresi, kurumsüresi ve ücret değiĢkenleri arasında anlamlı bir farklılık bulunamamıĢtır. Ayrıca araĢtırma sonucunda tarih öğretmenlerinin iĢ doyum düzeyleri ile tükenmiĢlik düzeyleri arasında kiĢisel baĢarı düzeyi hariç negatif bir iliĢki tespit edilmiĢtir. The purpose of this study is to figure out if there have been any differences, by using demographic variables (gender, age, marital status, education level, occupation period, the institution period and wages), in the job satisfaction and professional burnout of history teachers working in secondary schools in the city center of Van. 91 of 92 history teachers working in 38 secondary schools in the city center of Van have taken part in the study. 90 current surveys have been evaluated. Using Minnesota Job Satisfaction Scale to measure history teachers' job satisfaction levels, participants' intrinsic satisfaction, extrinsic satisfaction, and general satisfaction levels have been determined. Another scale, Maslach Burnout Scale has been used to determine history teachers' emotional exhaustion, desensitization and personal accomplishment, and overall burnout levels. Personal Information Form too is available in the study. For the analysis of the data obtained in the study, 'SPSS 15 .0' package program has been used. And for analysis of the data, 't-test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), correlation and Tukey HSD' test techniques have been used. The study has demonstrated that the history teachers' overall job satisfaction level is 'high', yet their professional burnout level is 'medium'. Analyses by some demographic variables about job satisfaction have shown a significant difference in gender variable, however, the ones both for job satisfaction and professional burnout level by some demographic variables have indicated no significant differences in age, marital status, education level, occupation period, institution period and wage variables. In addition, at the end of study, with the exception of their personal accomplishment level, negative correlation has been ascertained between job satisfaction levels and burnout levels of history teachers.
