An Evaluation of the Novels 'walden by Henry David Thoreau, 'the Sun Also Rises' by Ernest Hemingway's and 'white Noises' by Don Delillo in the Context of Eco-Psychology

Abstract

Doğa, çevre ve ekoloji kavramları literatür çalışmalarında uzun süre hak ettiği yeri bulamamıştır. Doğanın ve çevrenin tahribi, ekolojik dengenin bozulması, özellikle insan dışı varlıklarda ciddi zararlara neden olmuştur. Bu olumsuzlukların en önemli nedenleri olarak insan merkezli yaklaşımlar ve büyümeye dayalı ekonomik sistem gösterilmektedir. Bu bağlamda eko-psikoloji, 1982 yılında Paul Shepard'ın çalışmasıyla öne çıkmış ve Theodore Roszak'ın (1992) 'The Voice of the Earth' kitabında kullanılmıştır. Eko-psikoloji, doğayı ve insanı psikolojik olarak birleştirmeyi ve sürdürülebilir zihinsel sağlık ve davranış için beyin ve çevre arasındaki etkileşimi anlamayı amaçlar. İnsanlar ve doğal dünya arasındaki genellikle ihmal edilen gerçek bağlantıya odaklanır. Bu nedenle, bu çalışma, siyasi, ekonomik ve sosyal ideolojilerin, bilimsel ve teknolojik uygulamaların yanı sıra felsefi ve dini sistemlerin insan-çevre ilişkileri arasındaki bağlantıyı etkilediğini göstermek için insan ve çevre arasındaki etkileşimi araştırmak için hazırlanmıştır. Bu amaca ulaşmak için Amerikan Edebiyatının farklı dönemlere ait üç romanı eko-psikoloji bağlamında ele alınmıştır. Bu bağlamda Henry David'in 'Walden', Ernest Hemingway'in 'The Sun Also Rises' ve Don Delillo'nun 'White Noises' adlı romanları seçilmiştir. Dolayısıyla bu çalışma, Romantizm, Modernizm ve Postmodernizm döneminde Amerikalıların doğaya yönelik tutumlarına odaklanmamızı sağlayacak ve eko-psikoloji ilkelerini uygulayarak doğanın karakter psikolojisi üzerindeki rolünü belirleyecektir.

The concepts of nature, environment, and ecology could not find the place they deserve in literature studies for a long time. The destruction of nature, and the environment, the deterioration of the ecological balance caused serious damage, especially to non-human beings. Human-centered approaches and the growth-based economic system are shown as the most important reasons for these negativities. In this context, eco-psychology came to the fore in 1982 with the work of Paul Shepard and was used in the book 'The Voice of the Earth' by Theodore Roszak (1992). Eco-psychology aims to unify nature and humans psychologically and understand the interaction between the brain and the environment for sustainable mental health and behavior. It focuses on the often neglected true link between people and the natural world. Therefore, this work was prepared to investigate the interaction between humans and the environment to show that political, economic, and social ideologies, scientific and technological practices, as well as philosophical and religious systems affect the connection between human-environment relationships. To achieve this goal, eco-psychology analysis was applied to the three novels of American Literature belonging to different periods. In this context, the novel 'Walden' by Henry David, 'The Sun Also Rises' by Ernest Hemingway, and 'White Noises' by Don Delillo was chosen. Therefore, this study will enable us to focus on the attitudes of Americans in Romanticism, Modernism, and Postmodernism era towards nature and will determine the role of nature on the psychology of the character by applying the principles of eco-psychology.
