The Secondary School Students' Metaphorical Perceptions of Social Studies Course and Social Studies Teacher

Abstract

Bu çalışma ortaokulda farklı sınıf düzeylerinde (5, 6, 7 8. sınıf) öğrenim gören öğrencilerin 'sosyal bilgiler dersi' ve 'sosyal bilgiler öğretmenine' dönük algılarını belirlemek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Çalışma grubunu 2022/2023 eğitim öğretim yılında Van ili İpekyolu, Tuşba ve Edremit ilçelerinde öğrenim gören 743 ortaokul öğrencisi oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmada nitel araştırma desenlerinden biri olan olgu bilim (fenomenoloji) deseni kullanılmıştır. Bu araştırmada veri toplama aracı olarak 'Açık Uçlu Görüşme Formu' kullanılmıştır. Katılımcıların geliştirdikleri metaforlar içerik analizi yöntemi ile analiz edilmiştir. Araştırma sonucunda öğrencilerin görüşlerinden sosyal bilgiler dersine yönelik 250 kavramın 19 kategori altında; sosyal bilgiler öğretmenine yönelik ise 182 kavramın 16 kategori altında toplandığı görülmüştür. Sosyal bilgiler dersine yönelik en baskın kategori ve metaforların tarih kategorisi kapsamı içinde tarih disiplini metaforunun, hayat kategorisi kapsamı içinde hayatın kendisi metaforunun, gezegen kategorisi kapsamı içinde ise dünya metaforunun; sosyal bilgiler öğretmenine yönelik en baskın kategori ve metaforların ise bilgi/bilge kategorisi kapsamında bilgin metaforunun, bilim/öğretmen kategorisi kapsamında ise bilim insanı kategorisinin olduğu tespit edilmiştir

This study was carried out to determine the perceptions of students studying at different grade levels (5, 6, 7, 8th grade) in secondary school towards 'social studies lesson' and 'social studies teacher'. The working group of this research consists of 743 secondary school students studying in İpekyolu, Tuşba and Edremit districts of Van province in the 2022/2023 academic year. The phenomenon science (phenomenology) pattern, which is one of the qualitative research patterns, was used in the research. In this research, the 'Open-Ended Interview Form' was used as a data collection tool. The metaphors developed by the participants were analyzed by the content analysis method. As a result of the research, it was found that 250 concepts related to the social studies lesson from the students' opinions were collected under 19 categories; and 182 concepts related to social studies teachers were collected under 16 categories. The most dominant categories and metaphors for the social studies course are the metaphor of the discipline of history within the scope of the history category, the metaphor of life itself within the scope of the life category, and the metaphor of the world within the scope of the planet category; it has been determined that the most dominant categories and metaphors for social studies teachers are the metaphor of the scientist within the scope of the knowledge / wise category and the scientist category within the scope of the science / teacher category.
