Investigation of Teachers and Students Opinions About the Social Studies Course at Secondary School for the Hearing Impaired

Abstract

Bu tezin amacı işitme engelliler ortaokulunda okutulan sosyal bilgiler dersine ilişkin öğretmen ve öğrenci görüşlerini belirlemektir. Bu araştırmada nitel araştırma yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Araştırmada yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme tekniği ile veriler toplanmıştır. Araştırma verileri Doğu Anadolu Bölgesinde Elazığ (bir öğretmen, üç öğrenci), Erzurum (bir öğretmen, dört öğrenci), Malatya (bir öğretmen, dört öğrenci) ve Van (iki öğretmen, dört öğrenci) İlerinde bulunan İşitme Engelliler Ortaokulundaki toplam beş öğretmen ve on beş öğrenciden toplanılmıştır. Araştırma verileri betimsel analiz tekniği kullanılarak analiz edilmiştir. Araştırmada işitme engelliler okullarında okutulan Sosyal Bilgiler dersinin öğrenme alanlarının işitme engelli öğrenciler için soyut kavramlar içerdiği, yoğun ve zor kazanımlar kapsadığına yönelik bulgulara ulaşılmıştır. Ayrıca Sosyal Bilgiler öğretmenleri ile işitme engelli öğrenciler için Sosyal Bilgiler dersinin işlenişinin zor olduğu, öğrenciler için ders içeriğinin soyut olması nedeniyle dersin anlaşılmadığı, öğretmenler ile işitme engelli öğrenciler arasında iletişim güçlüğünün yaşanması nedeniyle öğrencilerin sınavlarda zorlandıkları saptanmıştır. Araştırmada sosyal bilgiler öğretim programının işitme engelli öğrencilerin düzeylerine uygun olmadığı, konuyu kavratmaya yönelik görsellerin yetersiz olduğu sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Araştırmada işitme engelli öğrenciler için ayrı bir Sosyal Bilgiler Öğretim Programı hazırlanması, işitme engelli öğrencilere uygun ders kitabı ve içeriklerin oluşturulması, ders işlenişinde görsell ağırlıklı materyallerin kullanılması gibi önerilerden bulunmuştur.

The aim of this thesis is to determine the opinions of the students and teachers that study in the elementary school of hearing impaired students. Qualitative research method was used in this study. We collected data with the semi-structured interwiew technique in this research. The study data was collected from total of five teachers and fifteen students that are in the schools of hearing impaired students located in Eastern Anatolia Region: Elazığ (one teacher, three students), Erzurum (one teacher, four students), Malatya (one teacher, four students) and Van (one teacher, four students). The study data was analyzed by using the descriptive analysis technique. In the research, it has been found that the learning areas of the Social Studies course taught in schools for the hearing impaired include abstract concepts for students with hearing impairment and include intense and difficult acquisitions. In addition, it was determined that Social Studies teachers and hearing impaired students found it very difficult to teach the Social Studies lesson, the course content was not understood for the students because the course content was abstract, and the students had difficulty in the course exam due to communication difficulties between the teachers and the hearing impaired students. In the research, it was concluded that since the social studies curriculum was basically prepared for normal students, the program was not suitable for the level of hearing-impaired students, and that the visuals for understanding the subject were insufficient. In the research, suggestions were made such as preparing a separate Social Studies Curriculum for hearing-impaired students, creating textbooks and contents suitable for hearing-impaired students, and using visual materials in the course.
