Investigation of the Plinian Faal Deposit and the Base Surge Units of the Base Surge Units of the Nemrut Stratovolcano

Abstract

Bu çalışma, Yüzüncü Yıl Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, Jeoloji Mühendisliği Anabilim Dalı bünyesinde Yüksek Lisans Tezi olarak hazırlanmıştır.Çalışmanın amacı, Bitlis ili Tatvan ilçesi kuzeyinde yüzeylenen Nemrut Stratovolkanı, Doğu Anadolu'da Kuvaterner yaşlı volkan dizisinin en önemli aktif üyelesinin patlama ürünleri olan Pliniyen düşüş çökelleri ve taban yayılım birimleri incelenmesini kapsamaktadır. Nemrut stratovolkanının volkanolojik evrimi Kaldera Öncesi Evre, Kaldera Sonrası Evre ve Geç Evre olmak üzere üç aşamada gerçekleşmiştir. Her evre kendi içerisinde lav ve piroklastik birimlerle karakterize edilmektedir.Bu çalışma kapsamında Volkanın Volkanolojik evriminde önemli rol oynayan piroklastik kayaçlar incelenmiştir. Nemrut strartovolkanına ait piroklastik ürünler, paleosol gözlemleriyle 3 faz halinde incelenmiştir. İlk faz, pliniyen geri düşüşler ve pomza akışından oluşmaktadır. Ana ignimbirit ikinci faz içerisinde yer almakta olup pomza ve litik içerikleri, derecelenmeleri, büyüklükleri, kaynaşma dereceleri ile renkleri göz önünde bulundurularak 3 seviye halinde incelenmiştir. Üçüncü faz ise pliniyen pomza ve kül geri düşme ürünlerinden oluşmuştur.Bununla beraber Kaldera sonrası evrede yer alan ve Nemrut Kalderası'nın tabanının büyük bir kısmını kaplayan piroklastik taban yayılım ürünlerinin özellikleri belirlenerek taban yayılım oluşumlarını oluşturan mekanizmalar belirlenmeye çalışılmıştır.Bu amaç kapsamında Kaldera öncesi evrede gelişen piroklastik kayaçların arazide ayrıntılı incelemesi yapılıp birbirinden farklı ürünler ayırt edilerek bu kayaçların mineralojik-petrografik özellikleri belirlenmiştir.Anahtar kelimeler: Nemrut Stratovolkanı, Kaldera, İgnimbirit, Volkan, Piroklastik, mineraloji-petrografi,

This thesis was prepared at the Department Geological Engineering and presented for a Higher License Degree, in accordance with the regulations of the Institute of Science, University of Yüzüncü Yıl.The aim of this work is to investigate and evaluate the significance of the plinian fall deposits and the base surge units of Nemrut strato-volcano.. Nemrut stratovolcano, which is located .at the northern part of Tatvan district of Bitlis province, is one of the active member of the Queternary volcanism in the Eastern Anotolia. The volcanogenic phases of the Nemrut stratovolcano are considered in three phases which are defines as pre-caldera, post-caldera and a late stage, each of which is characterized with its own characteristic lava and pyroclastic units. The lava and the pyroclastic rocks have also been investigated to contribute to the understanding of the volcanogenic phase of volcano.The pyroclastic products of the Nemrut stratovolcano are divided into three distinct phases in terms of interbedded palaeosols within the pyroclatics. The pyroclastic deposits of the pre-caldera stage are divided into three phases on the basis of palaeosols that separate them. The first phase includes plinian pumice falls and a pyroclastic flow deposit. The major ignimbrite occurs in the second pyroclastic phase which is also subdivided into three sub-units based on the characteristics of colour, internal grading, size of pumices and lithic clasts, and the degree of welding. The third and last pyroclastic phase was dominated by plinian pumice and ash fall deposits.The characteristics of the pyroclastic base surge products, which cover a large area in the Nemrut caldera plase and the eastern wall of the caldera, have been determined with a particular attention directed to their petrography and minerology, and their mode of mechanism are evaluated.
