Woman in Cormac Mccarthy's Border Trilogy

Abstract

Cormac McCarthy Amerikan edebiyatının önde gelen romancıları arasında yer alır. Güney Gotik türünde verdiği eserlerle çoğu edebiyat eleştirmeni tarafından William Faulkner ve Herman Melville gibi usta romancılarla karşılaştırılmıştır. Sınır Üçlemesi olarak bilinen All the Pretty Horses (1992), The Crossing (1994) ve Cities of the Plain (1998) adlı romanları tarz ve hava olarak kötülüğün doğasını irdelediği önceki eserlerinden daha insanî ve olumlu duygular barındırır. Bu açıdan Sınır Üçlemesi ve hemen öncesinde yazdığı Blood Meridian or the Evening Redness in the West McCarthy için hem Güney Gotik tarzından Batı tarzına bir geçiş hem de tanınırlık ve okunurluk açısından bir dönüm noktasıdır. Genel olarak Batı tarzının kadını ele alış biçimi kadın araştırmaları yapan uzmanların eleştirilerine hedef olmuştur. Çoğu zaman kovboyların at üstündeki maceralarının betimlendiği bu türden romanlarda kadın bir kenar süsü olmanın ötesine geçememektedir. Bunun gibi eleştiriler modern dönemde yazılmış eserleri farklı bir gözle okuma ihtiyacı doğurmuş, bazı durumlarda yazarlar kadın düşmanı olarak etiketlenmiştir. Bu tezde Amerikan romanında önemli bir yere sahip olan Cormac McCarthy'nin Sınır Üçlemesi, feminizmin özellikle geçen yüzyılın ortalarından itibaren sağladığı farklı bakış açısıyla incelenecek ve kadının McCarthy'nin değişen tarzındaki yeri incelenecektir.

Cormac McCarthy is one of the leading novelists of American literature. His Southern Gothic novels have been compared to the works of great novelists such as William Faulkner and Herman Melville by many literary critics. The Border Trilogy, along with his previous novel Blood Meridian or the Evening Redness in the West represent a transition from the Southern Gothic to the Western and a turning point in terms of recognition for McCarthy. Known as The Border Trilogy, his novels All the Pretty Horses (1992), The Crossing (1994), and Cities of the Plain (1998) are more humane and positive in style and mood than his southern novels. In general, the western genre's treatment of women has been the target of experts who conduct women's studies. According to the women's studies scholars, Westerns are places for the exhibition of the adventures of cowboys on horseback, and women are mere ornamental objects with marginal qualities. Such criticism revealed the need to read works written in the modern period from a different perspective. As a result of this new reading, some authors have been subjected to allegations of misogyny. In this thesis, Cormac McCarthy's Border Trilogy, which occupies an influential ground in American fiction, will be examined from the different perspectives that feminism has provided, especially, since the middle of the last century, and the place of women in McCarthy's changing style will be examined.
