Brian Friel Oyunlarının Sömürge Sonrası Açısından ve Politik Bağlamda Değerlendirilmesi

Abstract

İrlanda uzun yıllardır birçok sömürge ve sömürgeden kaynaklanan problemler yaşayan bir ülke olmuştur. Ireland has been a country which has had colonial problems and many others rising from colonialism for ages. The uneasiness which started with English colonialism, reached its peak with the conflicts between the Unionists and Republicans, the Catholics and Protestants, the North and the South, and these all have created many riots and disturbances in the country till 21st century.Born and grown up in Northern Ireland, Brian Friel has been able to experience this high tension in the country. Colonial background that he shares with all the other Irishmen is crucially important as it has taken him to write about the problems in his plays. However, being a Catholic, Friel?s sensitivity has been really high, as the Irish Catholics have been double-suppressed. As a reflection of such background, in his plays Friel extensively examines the post-colonial and political problems the society suffers from. In accordance with these, this study aims to explore Friel?s drama both as a response and a direct reflection of his society?s condition at the same time.In the first chapter, I have studied the biography, literary career and the works of Friel. I have also presented Field Day Theatre, which was established by Friel, and political background of Ireland in this chapter. In the next chapter, Translations (1980) and Philadelphia, Here I Come! (1964) are studied within the scope of a post-colonial analysis. In the last chapter, two other plays, The Mundy Scheme (1969) and The Freedom of the City (1973) are evaluated from a political perspective. These plays I have studied are examples of Friel?s distinctive oeuvre, but for a whole and extensive research, all of his plays can be studied separately.
