The Use of Local and Oral History in Social Studies Teaching: Ahlat Example

Abstract

Bu araştırmanın amacı Ahlat'ta görev yapan sosyal bilgiler öğretmenlerinin sosyal bilgiler derslerinde yerel ve sözlü tarihin kullanımı hakkında görüşlerini belirlemektir. Bu araştırma 2020-2021 eğitim öğretim yılında Bitlis ili Ahlat ilçesindeki sosyal bilgiler öğretmenleriyle yürütülmüştür. Araştırmanın evreni, Bitlis ilinin Ahlat ilçesinde görev yapan sosyal bilgiler öğretmenlerinden oluşmaktadır. Araştırmanın örneklemini ise Ahlat ilçesinde bulunan ortaokullarda görev yapan ve bu araştırmaya gönüllü olarak katılan öğretmenler oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmaya gönüllü olarak katılan 17 sosyal bilgiler öğretmeni ile görüşme yapılmıştır. Görüşme telefon yoluyla gerçekleştirilmiş ve veriler kayıt altına alınmıştır. Daha sonra kaydedilen konuşmalar dinlenerek word ortamına aktarılmıştır. Araştırmada nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden biri olan durum çalışması kullanılmıştır. Nitel verilerin toplanmasında yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme formundan yararlanılmıştır. Sosyal bilgiler öğretmenleri için hazırlanan görüşme formunun ilk bölümünde kişisel bilgiler, ikinci bölümde ise Ahlat'ta görev yapan sosyal bilgiler öğretmenlerine yerel ve sözlü tarihin derslerde kullanımı ile ilgili sorular yer almaktadır. Araştırmanın nitel verileri içerik analiz yöntemiyle çözümlenmiştir. Araştırma sonucunda elde edilen bulgulara göre; sosyal bilgiler öğretmenlerinin derslerinde yerel ve sözlü tarih kullanımı konusunda olumlu görüşlere sahip oldukları tespit edilmiştir. Öğretmenlerin yerel ve sözlü tarihin ne olduğu ve önemi ile ilgili gerekli bilgiye sahipken, bu yöntemleri uygulamaya dönük ifadelerde katılım ve görüş belirtme oranının düşük olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Öğretmenler bulundukları yerin yerel tarihi hakkında daha fazla bilgiye sahip olmak için bu konuda eğitime ihtiyaçları olduğunu ifade etmiştir.

The aim of this research is to determine the opinions of social studies teachers working in Ahlat about the use of local and oral history in social studies lessons. This research was conducted with social studies teachers in the Ahlat district of Bitlis province in the 2020-2021 academic year. The universe of the research consists of social studies teachers working in Ahlat district of Bitlis province. The sample of the study consists of teachers working in secondary schools in Ahlat district and voluntarily participating in this research. 17 social studies teachers who voluntarily participated in the research were interviewed. The interview was conducted via telephone and the data was recorded. Then, the recorded conversations were listened to and transferred to the word environment. The case study, which is one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the research. A semi-structured interview form was used to collect qualitative data. The first part of the interview form prepared for social studies teachers includes personal information, and the second part includes questions for social studies teachers working in Ahlat about the use of local and oral history in lessons. Qualitative data of the research were analyzed by content analysis method. According to the findings obtained as a result of the research; It has been determined that social studies teachers have positive views on the use of local and oral history in their lessons. It has been determined that while the teachers have the necessary knowledge about what local and oral history is and its importance, the rate of participation and expressing opinions is low in the expressions that apply these methods. Teachers stated that they need training on this subject in order to have more information about the local history of their place.
