Evaluation of Obesity in Cats and Dogs Together With the Profiles of Pet Owners

Abstract

. Obezite hem kedi hem de köpekler için günümüzde yaygın seyreden bir beslenme bozukluğudur. Obezite'nin genetik yatkınlıklar, hormonal mekanizmalar ve diyet, egzersiz gibi hem hayvana hem de insana bağlı birçok sebebi bulunmaktadır. Obeziteyle bağlantılı olarak kedi ve köpeklerde diabetes mellitus, kardiyovasküler sistemi hastalıkları, kas-iskelet sistemi hastalıkları ve hatta morbidite gibi ciddi ve geri dönüşü olmayan sorunlar gelişebilir. Dünya üzerinde kedi ve köpek obezitesi üzerine yapılmış çalışmalar mevcut olmasına rağmen Türkiye'de konu hakkında bilgiler sınırlıdır. Bu çalışmayla ülkemizde de kedi ve köpek obezitesi hakkında verilerin anket yoluyla elde edilmesi amaçlanmıştır. Çalışmaya 1135 kedi ve köpek sahibi katılmıştır. Katılımcıların 819'u kadın, 299'u ise erkektir. Hayvan sahiplerinin 882'si kedi, 253'ü ise köpek sahibidir. 1079 kişi obezitenin kedi ve köpekler için bir hastalık olduğunu belirtmişlerdir. Kedilerin %42'sinin, köpeklerin ise %30'unun aşırı kilolu/obez olduğu bu çalışmayla tespit edilmiştir. Dişi kedi ve köpeklerin %37'sinin, erkek kedi ve köpeklerin %41'inin aşırı kilolu/obez olduğu belirlenmiştir. Aşırı kilolu/obez kedi ve köpeklerin %57'si ad libitum, %69'u ise ödül mamasıyla beslenmektedir. Çalışmayla ülkemizdeki kedi ve köpek sahiplerinin %8'inin vejetaryen, %61'inin vegan olduğu da tespit edilmiştir. Kedi ve köpeklerin vejetaryen beslenmesini uygun bulmayan hayvan sahiplerinin oranı %66 iken, vegan beslenmesini uygun bulmayanların oranı %64'tür. Bu çalışmayla kedi ve köpek obezitesi hakkında ülkemizde veriler elde edilmiştir ve bu verilerin ileride konu hakkında çalışma yapacaklara fikir vermesi ümit edilmektedir.

Obesity is a common nutritional disorder for both cats and dogs today. Obesity has many animal and human-related causes such as genetic predispositions, hormonal mechanisms, diet and exercise. In connection with obesity, serious and irreversible problems such as diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular system diseases, musculoskeletal system diseases and even morbidity may develop in cats and dogs. Although there are studies on cat and dog obesity in the world, there is limited information on the subject in Turkey. With this study, it was aimed to obtain data on cat and dog obesity in our country through a questionnaire. 1138 cat and dog owners participated in the study. 819 of the participants are female and 299 are male. 882 of the pet owners are cat owners and 253 are dog owners. 1079 people stated that obesity is a disease for cats and dogs. In this study, it was determined that 42% of cats and 30% of dogs were overweight/obese. It was determined that 37% of female cats and dogs and 41% of male cats and dogs were overweight/obese. 57% of overweight/obese cats and dogs are fed ad libitum and 69% are fed with treats. In the study, it was determined that 8% of cat and dog owners in Turkey are vegetarian and 61% are vegan. While the rate of pet owners who do not approve of vegetarian nutrition for cats and dogs is 66%, the rate of those who do not find vegan nutrition appropriate is 64%. With this study, data on cat and dog obesity have been obtained in our country and it is hoped that these data will give an idea to those who will work on the subject in the future.
