Abstract
This study was carried out between September 2007 and March 2008 in the laboratory of Yuzuncu Yıl University Fisheries Engineering Department and Van City Police Department fingerprint laboratory. In this study, retention periods of latent fingerprints in submersed smooth surfaces was determined. In the experiments, 60x40x30 cm sized aquariums was used and water temperature, salinity, conductivity, pH and dissolved oxygen was measured daily. Each group was with two parallel. In the experiments, freshwater, 10?, 20? and 38? saltwaters and Lake Van Water were used. Moreover, in freshwater and Lake Van Water, the effects of water temperature in 10, 20 and 30 °C on latent fingerprints retention period were defined. Three different person was dab on same microscope slide, and the microscope slides was put in the waters that they have different characteristics and they was removed from the waters periodically. In the preliminary experiment, it was determined that the super glue method will be use in fingerprint identify method and the microscope siledes will out of the water to with two day perods. At the end of the experiments, it was determined that the latent fingerprints was identified in different periods and different proportion according to water quality criteria. In Van Lake Water, fingerprint identify period continued over 90 days in 20 °C water temperature and it was the longest period of the experiments. The shortest periods was seen in the 30 °C freshwater and it was seven days.As a result of that investigation, it was seen in all experiments group that when the water temperature was increased, the fingerprint identify periods was shortened.Key Words: Salinity, Water temperaue, Lake Van water, Fingerprints
