Comparison of the Attitudes of Social Studies Teachers and English Language Teachers Towards To the Multicultural Education

Abstract

Bu çalışmada sosyal bilgiler ve İngilizce öğretmenlerinin çokkültürlü eğitime karşı tutumlarını ortaya koymak amaçlanmıştır. Bu çalışma araştırma süreci, veri toplama ve analizine göre nicel araştırma yöntemiyle yapılmıştır. Araştırmanın evrenini Van ilinde ilköğretim okullarında görev yapan sosyal bilgiler ve İngilizce öğretmenleri oluştururken bunlar arasında amaçlı örnekleme yöntemi ile öğretmenler belirlenmiştir. Ölçek, Van ili genelinde 79'u sosyal bilgiler ve 121'i İngilizce olmak üzere 200 öğretmene uygulanmıştır. Verilerin elde edilmesinde Jojeph G. Ponterotto ve arkadaşlarının (1998) geliştirdikleri, Yazıcı, Başol ve Toprak'ın 2009 yılında Geçerlik ve Güvenirlik çalışması ile Türkçeye uyarladığı 'Öğretmenlerin Çokkültürlük Tutum Ölçeği' kullanılmıştır. Elde edilen veriler SPSS ile analiz edilmiştir. Pilot çalışmada ölçeğin Cronbach Alpha kat sayısı .718 değeri ile güvenilir olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Araştırmanın alt problemlerinden yola çıkarak, ikili karşılaştırmalarda t testi, üç ve daha fazla seçeneği bulunan karşılaştırmalarda ise Tek Yönlü ANOVA testi uygulanmıştır. Bu çerçevede, yapılan ikili karşılaştırmalarda; 'cinsiyet', 'ilköğretim kültürel yapı', 'ortaöğretim kültürel yapı', 'üniversite kültürel yapı' ve 'yurt dışı deneyimi' değişkenlerinde anlamlı bir farklılık olmadığı görülürken; 'eğitim durumu', 'mezun olunan fakülte', 'branş' ve 'okul statüsü'nde anlamlı bir farklılık olduğu tespit edilmiştir. İkiden fazla karşılaştırma gerektiren 'meslek yılı' ve 'okulun bulunduğu yerin yerleşik yapısı' değişkenlerinde ise anlamlı bir farklılık olmadığı belirlenmiştir. Sosyal bilgiler ve İngilizce öğretmenlerinin çokkültürlü tutum seviyelerinin 'yüksek' olduğu ifade edilebilir. Son olarak sosyal bilgiler öğretmenlerinin İngilizce öğretmenlerine göre olumlu anlamda daha yüksek çokkültürlülük tutumu sergiledikleri ifade edilebilir. In this study, quantitative method was used according to study process, data collecting and analyzing. While the population of the study was composed of social studies and English teachers working in primary and secondary schools in the province of Van, teachers among them were determined by purposeful sampling method. The research scale was applied to 79 Social Studies and 121 English teachers in Van. 'Teachers' Attitudes of Multiculturalism Scale' which was developed by Joseph G. Ponteretto and his friends (1998), adopted to Turkish language with validity and reliability studies by Yazıcı, Başol and Toprak in 2009, was used in the process of getting data. The obtained data were analyzed with the SPSS (Version 22.0). In the pilot study, Cronbach Alpha coefficient of the scale was found to be reliable with a value of .718. Based on the sub-problems of the study, T Test was used for paired comparisons and One Way ANOVA test was used for comparisons with three or more options. While there is no significant difference in the variables of 'gender', 'primary education cultural structure', 'secondary education cultural structure', 'university cultural structure' and 'abroad experience'; It has been determined that there is a significant difference in 'educational status', 'graduated faculty', 'branch' and 'school status'. It was determined that there was no significant difference in the variables of 'the year of the occupation' and ' school location', which require more than two comparisons and one-way ANOVA test was applied. It can be stated that Social Studies and English teachers' multicultural attitude levels are at 'high' level. Finally, it can be stated that social studies teachers exhibit a higher multicultural attitude in a positive sense compared to English teachers.
