An Analysis of Urban Culture and Urban Identity in the Context of Globalization: Example of Van Province

Abstract

Kentler, sınırları içerisinde yaşayan toplumların kültürel, sosyal, ekonomik ve dinsel özellikleriyle şekillenen yaşam alanları olup toplumun bir yansıması niteliğindedirler. Tarih boyunca savaşlar, göçler, afetler ve ekonomik gelişmeler gibi olaylarla şekil değiştiren kentlerin günümüzdeki yapısını biçimlendiren olayların başında Sanayi Devrimi'nin geldiği genel kabul görmüş bir olgudur. Sanayi Devrimi ile birlikte kentlerde fordist üretim yapısı hakimiyet kazanmaya başlamış ve sanayi kentleri ve buna bağlı olarak birlikte bu kentlerde de işçi sınıfları oluşmuştur. Bu durum tarım sınıfının işçi sınıfına dönüştüğü şeklinde yorumlanabilir. Van ilinin küreselleşme bağlamında şekillenen kent kimliği ve kent kültürünün incelendiği bu araştırmada, nicel ve nitel araştırma yöntemleri birlikte kullanılmıştır. Literatür taramasıyla elde edilen bilgiler araştırmanın kavramsal çerçevesini oluşturmuştur. Bununla birlikte yapılan saha çalışmasında, Van'ın küreselleşme unsurlarına bağlı olarak kültürel ve kent kimliği bağlamında nasıl şekillendiği irdelenmiştir. Kentin kimlik unsurlarının tarihi ve coğrafik kriterlere bağlı olarak şekillendiği sonucuna ulaşılırken küreselleşme etkisinde tarımsal toplumun kentleştiği, Van Gölü turizminin kentin ekonomik çehresini değiştirdiği ve bu değişimlerin kent kültürüne yansıdığı sonuçlarına ulaşılmıştır. Bu yansımalar, giyim alışkanlıkları, kültürel davranışlar, sosyal ilişkiler gibi hususlarda etki sahibi olduğu da yapılan araştırma neticesinde ulaşılan bulgulardandır.

Cities are living spaces shaped by the cultural, social, economic and religious characteristics of the societies living within their borders and they are a reflection of the society. It is a generally accepted fact that the Industrial Revolution was at the forefront of the events shaping the current structure of cities that have been transformed by events such as wars, migrations, disasters and economic developments throughout history. With the Industrial Revolution, the fordist production structure began to gain dominance in the cities and industrial cities and consequently the working classes formed in these cities. It can be interpreted that the agricultural class has turned into a working class. Quantitative and qualitative research methods were used together in this study, where urban identity and urban culture shaped in the context of globalization of Van province were examined. The information obtained through literature review constituted the conceptual framework of the research. However, in the field study, it is examined how Van is shaped in the context of cultural and urban identity depending on the elements of globalization. While it is concluded that the identity elements of the city are shaped according to historical and geographical criteria, it is concluded that agricultural society is urbanized under the influence of globalization, Van Lake tourism changes the economic face of the city and these changes are reflected in the city culture. These reflections, clothing habits, cultural behaviors, social relations have an impact on such issues as a result of the research conducted in the findings.
