Abstract

His book, Guide To The Holy Land, which contains the travel notes of Theoderich, one of the monks of Würzburg, to Jerusalem between 1171-1173, is one of the main sources that undertook an important task in enlightening the history of the Middle Ages. The work was translated from Latin to English and published in 1891 by Aubrey Stewart. The same work was published again in New York, among the Italica Press publications in 1897, with some additions, and in 1986 without being changed. Theoderich provides detailed information about the geography, topography, architecture of the regions he travels, and the sacred shrines such as St. Mary's Chapel, Helena Chapel, and the Temple of the Lord, which are important for the Christian world. It also mentions the gardens, mountains, valleys, rivers, underground waters, fountains, roads, walls, streets and various soil types of the sacred lands. Theoderich's detailed and clear descriptions of the architecture of Jerusalem and its environs provide the basis for us to think that he may have worked as an architect in the construction of the buildings. Bölgede yaşayan Müslümanlar, Museviler ile Hıristiyanların gelenek, görenek, örf adetlerin yanında günlük rutin işlerini ve ilişkilerini anlatmaktadır. Diğer yandan eser çok kültürlü bir toplumda yaşayan insanların ortak bir coğrafyada buluştuklarını ve yaşadıklarını da göstermektedir.
