Al-farabi's and Spinisa's Conceptions of God

Abstract

Farabi Doğu'nun Spinoza da Batı'nın önde gelen en önemli filozoflarındandır. Her iki düşünür de gerek Yunan'ın felsefi mirasından gerekse içerisinde yetiştikleri dinsel geleneklerin teolojik birikiminden beslenerek kendine özgü bir metafizik, bir ontoloji ve siyaset felsefesi geliştirmiştir. Özellikle vahiy, peygamberlik, akıl-iman ilişkisi gibi meselelerde her iki filozofun birbirine oldukça benzer görüşleri ileri sürmüş olmaları ister istemez akla Spinoza'nın Farabi'den önemli ölçüde etkilenmiş olabileceği ihtimalini getirmektedir. Nitekim Farabi'nin Spinoza'yı Maimonides vasıtasıyla etkilediği yönünde kimi iddiaların olduğunu görmekteyiz. Bu meseleye ilişkin yapılan kimi Türkçe çalışmalar bu hususa özellikle dikkat çekmişlerdir. Bununla birlikte Farabi ile Spinoza arasında metafizik/ontoloji bağlamında Tanrı görüşleri bakımından bir benzerliğin olup olmadığına pek değinilmemiştir. Bu çalışma, her iki düşünürün metafiziklerinde/ontolojilerinde de kayda değer paralelliklerin olması gerektiği varsayımıyla hareket etmiş ve neticede onların, her iki düşünürün geliştirdiği kendine özgü bir Tanrı ve alem anlayışı (Birisi dualistik diğeri monistik) olsa da, metafizik görüşlerinde de ciddiye alınması gereken benzerliklerin olduğu fikrine ulaşmıştır

Farabi is one of the leading philosophers of the East and Spinoza is one of the leading philosophers of the West. Both philosophers developed a distinctive metaphysics, an ontology and a political philosophy, fed by both the philosophical heritage of Greece and the theological fund of religious traditions they grew up in. In particular, the fact that both philosophers put forward quite similar views in matters such as revelation, prophecy, and the relationship between mind and faith brings to associate with possibility that Spinoza may have been significantly influenced by Farabi. As a matter of fact, we see that there are some claims that Farabi have been influenced by Spinoza through Maimonides. Some Turkish studies on this issue have drawn particular attention to this topic. However, it has not been mentioned whether there is a similarity between Farabi and Spinoza in terms of philosophy of God in terms of metaphysics/ontology. This study acted with assumption that there must be considerable parallels in both philosophers' metaphysics/ontologies, and concluded that they have similarities to be taken into consideration in their metaphysical opinions, even though they have a unique philosophy of God and the life (one is dualistic and the other is monistic).
