Academicians' Attitudes Towards the Factors Affecting the Congress Preference and Evaluation of the Congress Tourism Potential of the Van Province

Abstract

Bir organizasyonun toplantıları sonucunda ortaya çıkan faaliyetler bütünü olan ve alternatif turizm türlerinden biri olan kongre turizmi, organizasyon üyelerinin belirli amaçlar ile toplanması ve bu toplanma ile ortaya çıkan turistik faaliyetler esasına dayanır. Özellikle son yıllarda turizm paydaşlarının çok önem verdiği ve en kazançlı turizm türlerinden biri olması, sektörde önemli bir konuma gelmesini sağlamıştır. Çalışmanın konusu ile ilgili yapılan literatür taramasında Van ili özelinde kongre turizmi alanında yapılmış çalışmalara rastlanılmamış olması, çalışmanın önemini ortaya koymaktadır. Van ilinde turizm sektörü sadece belirli alanlara yönelmiştir. Turizm paydaşlarının farklı turizm türlerine ve özellikle kongre turizmine yönelimi konusunda teşvik edici olması çalışmayı önemli kılmaktadır. Çalışmada, yüksek bir turizm potansiyeline sahip olan Van ilinin, kongre turizmine uygunluğu değerlendirilerek, il bazında sektöre ekonomik bir katkı sağlamayı teşvik etmek ve akademik anlamda ise literatüre bir zenginlik sağlamak amaçlanmıştır. Çalışmada kavramsal olarak ilkin kongre turizmi incelenmiştir. Sonrasında ise Van'ın tarihi ve kültürel yapısı, ulaşılabilirliği, kongre turizmi için gerekli ihtiyaçlara cevap verebilirliği incelenmiştir. Son bölümde ise, akademisyenlerin kongre tercihlerini etkileyen faktörlere yönelik tutumları ve Van'da faaliyet gösteren seyahat acentaları ve konaklama işletmelerinin Van'ın kongre turizmi potansiyeli ile ilgili algılarının değerlendirilmesine yönelik bir araştırma yapılmıştır. Araştırmada yöntem olarak, nicel araştırma yöntemi tercih edilmiştir. Çalışmanın evreni, Türkiye'deki akademisyenler ve Van'da faaliyet gösteren seyahat acentaları ve konaklama işletmeleri olarak belirlenmiştir. Belirlenen evrende örnekleme yapılarak ve anket tekniği kullanılarak veriler toplanmıştır. Elde edilen verilerin değerlendirilmesinde, sosyal bilimler alanındaki çalışmalarda sıkça kullanılan SPSS programı kullanılarak gerekli analizler yapılmıştır. Çalışmada yapılan analizlerle elde edilen bulgular sonucunda akademisyenlerin bir kongreye katılmalarını etkileyen faktörlerin sırasıyla sosyal aktivite ve aile ile katılabilme durumu, maliyet, zaman, destinasyon çekiciliği ve iv kongrenin özelliği olduğu belirlenmiştir. Diğer taraftan Van'daki turizm işletmelerinin, Van'ın kongre turizm potansiyeli ile ilgili algılarına bakıldığında; Van'daki tesis ve altyapı ile destinasyon çekiciliğinin kısmen yeterli olduğunu ve kongre turizminin Van'ın turizmi açısından kısmen önemli olduğunu düşündükleri ortaya çıkmıştır. Convention tourism is an alternative tourism type and comes up at the end of an organization's meetings, and is based on the gathering of members for specific aims. Especially in recent years were given importance for its winnings by stakeholders of tourism; hereby this type of tourism came up an important position in the sector. A literature review has been made regarding the subject of study. And no studies have been found in the field of congress tourism in the province of Van. Hence this situation reveals the importance of the study. The tourism sector has focused only on certain areas in Van city. Another factor that makes the study important is that it encourages tourism stakeholders to tend towards different types of tourism and especially to congress tourism. In the study, the suitability of Van city was evaluated for congress tourism. Thus, it aimed to encourage an economic contribution to the sector on a provincial basis and to provide richness to the literature in academic terms. In the study firstly, congress tourism is investigated conceptually, its history, formation, effects, the situation in the world and our country and congress organization are explained. Afterward, the historical and cultural accessibility of Van city and its responsiveness to the needs for congress tourism have been examined. In the last part, research was conducted to determine the academicians' attitudes towards factors affecting the congress preferences and to evaluate the perceptions of travel agencies and accommodation enterprises in the city regarding the congress tourism potential of Van. In the study, the quantitative research method was preferred as the research method. The universe of study to obtain data directly, academicians in Turkey and travel agencies and accommodation establishments operating in Van was designated. Data were collected by using survey technique by sampling in the determined universe. In the evaluation of obtained data, essential analyzes were made by using the SPSS program which is frequently used in social sciences. As a result of the findings obtained from the analysis made in the study, it was determined that the factors affecting the participation of academicians in a congress vi are respectively social activity and participation with family, cost, time, destination attractiveness, and the characteristics of the congress. On the other hand, considering the perceptions of tourism enterprises regarding the congress tourism potential of Van city; It was revealed that they think that the facilities and infrastructure in Van and the attraction of the destination are partially sufficient and that they think that congress tourism is partially important for Van's tourism.
