A Research on Teachers' Views on the Use of Literary Works in English Teaching

Abstract

İngilizcenin dünya genelinde ortak iletişim dili olarak kabul edilmesiyle beraber birçok dil öğretim yöntem ve tekniği ortaya çıkmıştır. Bu yöntemler tarihsel süreç içerisinde farklı kademe ve seviyelerde denenmiş ve araştırmalara konu olmuştur ancak yöntem ve teknikler kadar, bunları uygulayan öğretmenlerin görüşleri de oldukça önemlidir. Söz konusu bu durum, 'Öğretmenlerin İngilizce derslerinde edebi eserlerin kullanımına ilişkin görüşleri nelerdir?' başlığı altında bu çalışmada incelenmiştir. Bu doğrultuda, çalışmada tarihsel olarak dil ve edebiyat, edebiyat ve dil arasındaki ilişki, dil öğretiminde özgünvmateryal kullanılması gibi konulara odaklanılarak alan yazın taramasında bu konular taranmıştır. Bu çalışmada kartopu stratejisi ve kolay ulaşılabilirlik ilkesi temel alınarak örneklem olarak Millî Eğitim Bakanlığı'na bağlı ortaokul ve liselerde görev yapmakta olan 8 kadın ve 8 erkek olmak üzere toplam 16 öğretmen ile görüşme planı hazırlanmış ve görüşme yapılmıştır. Bu çalışmada nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden birebir görüşme yöntemi kullanılmış olup veri toplamak için yarı yapılandırılmış açık uçlu sorular sorulmuştur. Toplanan verilerin analizinde ise içerik analizi kullanılarak bulgular değerlendirilmiştir. Yapılan çalışmada İngilizce dersinde uygulanabilirlik açısından en kullanışlı edebi türün kısa hikâye, öğretmenlerin en sevdiği edebi türün de roman olduğu ortaya çıkmıştır. Uygun şartlar oluştuğunda edebi türlerin İngilizce dersinde kullanılmasının mümkün olduğu görüşü öne çıkan sonuç olmuştur.

With the acceptance of English as the common language of communication worldwide, many teaching methods and techniques have emerged. These methods have been tried at different levels in the historical process and have been the subject of research. However, the teachers' opinions who apply them are as important as the methods and techniques. This situation, in question, 'What are the teachers' views on the use of literary works in English lessons?' investigated in this study. In this direction, these subjects were scanned in the literature review, focusing on the subjects such as the historical relationship between language and literature, literature and language, and the use of authentic materials in language teaching. In the study, an interview plan was prepared based on the snowball strategy and the principle of easy accessibility. Interviews were conducted with 16 teachers, 8 women and 8 men, working in secondary and high schools affiliated to the Ministry of National Education as the sample. In this study, one-to-one interview method, one of the qualitative research methods, was used and semi-structured open-ended questions were asked to collect data. In the analysis of the collected data, the findings were evaluated by using content analysis. In the study, it was revealed that the most useful literary genre in terms of applicability in English class was short story, and the favorite literary genre of teachers was novel. The prominent result was the opinion that it is possible to use literary genres in English lessons when appropriate conditions are created.
