A Social Geography Research on the One and Only Armenian Village of Turkey 'vakıflı

Abstract

Bu tez kültür, kimlik, etnisite, gibi kavramları kültürel coğrafya ve farklı sosyal bilim disiplinleri çerçevesinde ele almıştır. Çalışma Hatay'ın Samandağ İlçesi Vakıflı köyünde yürütülmüştür. Çalışmada, Vakıflı Ermenilerini diğer bölge halkından ayıran unsurların neler olduğu ele alınmaya çalışılmıştır. Bölgede kültürel kimliğin nasıl sürdürüldüğü üzerine bir takım sorular sorulmuştur. Bu soruya yanıt bulmak için bölge Ermenilerinin içinde yaşadığı coğrafyanın geçmişi ve bugünü araştırılmıştır. Bunun sonucunda var olan kültürde ne gibi değişimlerin olduğu saptanmıştır. Toplada 19 mülakat, 19 anket uygulanmıştır. Yapılan mülakatlarda sorulan sorularla Vakıflı köyü Ermenileri geçmişine götürülmüş, köyde yaşayan bireylerin maddi ve manevi kültür unsurlarını nasıl tanımladığı saptanmaya çalışılmıştır. Aynı zamanda Vakıflı'daki maddi ve manevi unsurları hakkında detaylı bilgiler verilmiştir. Hatay'da Sünni Müslüman, Nusayri, Süryani, Yahudi, Ermeni, Kürt, Türk, Arap etnik kimliğine sahip bireyler bir arada yaşamaktadır. Ermenilerin bölgede hala varlığını sürdürmesi, içinde yaşanılan coğrafyanın hoşgörü ve dayanışma ortamı ile ilgilidir. Bölgede yaşayan azınlıklar siyasi güç erklerinin etkisi altında kalıp birbirleriyle herhangi bir çatışma içerisine girmemişlerdir. Bu durum bölge halkının kültürünü rahatça yaşayabilmesine bir olanak tanımıştır. Ayrıca farklı kültürel grupların yaşadığı ilişkiler kimlik bilincinin oluşmasında pozitif bir etkiye sahiptir. Çünkü kimlik, kültürlerarası ilişkilerle anlam kazanan bir öze sahiptir.

This thesis deals with concepts such as culture, identity, and ethnicity within the framework of cultural geography and different disciplines of social sciences. The study was conducted in the village of Vakifli located in Samandağ district of Hatay. In the study, it was attempted to discuss what distinguishes the Vakifli Armenians from other local communities. Some questions were raised about how cultural identity is maintained in the region. To be able to find an answer to these questions, the past and present of the geography in which the Armenians of the region live was investigated. As a result, what kind of changes took place in the existing culture has been determined. 19 interviews and 19 surveys were conducted in total. With the questions asked in the interviews, the Armenian people of Vakifli village were taken to the past and in this way, it was attempted to find out how the people living in the village define their own material and spiritual cultural elements. At the same time, detailed information about the material and spiritual elements of Vakifli was provided. In Hatay, people of different ethnic identities such as Sunni Muslims, Nusayris, Syriac Christians, Jews, Armenians, Kurds, Turks, and Arabs live together. The fact that the Armenians continue their existence in the region is related to the tolerance and solidarity environment of this region. The minorities living in the region have not engaged in any conflicts with each other by getting under the influence of some political powers. This has made it possible for the people of the region to live with their own cultures contentedly. Moreover, the relations among different cultural groups have a positive influence on the formation of identity consciousness because identity has a substance that gains meaning with intercultural relations.
