General Profile of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons in Turkey and Analysis of Occupational Satisfaction Through Surveys

dc.description.abstract Introduction This study was designed to investigate the factors involved in the selection of occupation, living and working standards and occupational satisfaction levels of plastic surgeons practicing in Turkey. Materials and Methods: The survey questionnaire was prepared and guidance was acquired from a sociologist and ethics approval was obtained from the executive board of Turkish society of plastic reconstructive and aesthetic surgeons (TSPRAS) in 2010. The survey questionnaire was mailed to all the members of the association and a total of 99 plastic surgeons answered the questionnaire. Results: The average age was 43.1 years, female / male ratio (1/3), respectively. 76% of the survey participants were married, and had children, 68% of 1 or 2. 31% of the participants were employed by university hospitals, 28% were employed by training and research hospitals and public hospitals, and the rest were self-employed. 56% pursued their childhood dream of entering medical school. Faculty of Medicine was their number 1 choice in 70% of the surgeons. Among these 62% of the surgeons thought that their residency program was subsequent. Overall, 91% were satisfied about their choice on becoming a plastic surgeon, 51% were satisfied with their position at work. 85% of the plastic surgeons are members of the Turkish society of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons had some kind of conflict with fellow members. 62% of the participants of the survey stated their misuse of the social media in their practice. Participants stated that the distribution of the types of surgeries they perform is as follows: 36% reconstructive procedures, 26% aesthetic procedures and 19% of the participants performed only minimally invasive procedures. Conclusions: This survey is designed to aid in determining the necessity level of plastic surgery specialists in our country and thereby define the factors that are consequential in achieving optimal occupational satisfaction. en_US
