Byzantine in the Period of Emperor Herakleios (610-641)

Abstract

Kartaca Eksarhı Herakleios'un oğlu olan Herakleios, İmparator Phokas'ın (602-610) tedhiş rejimine karşı ayaklandı. Mısır eyaletinin desteğini de alarak Kuzey Afrika birliklerinden oluşan bir filonun başında 3 Ekim 610'da Konstantinopolis'e varan Herakleios, Bizans tahtına oturdu. İmparator Herakleios Bizans tahtına çıktığında devlet sıkıntılı günler geçiriyordu. Aslında I. Justinianos (527-565)'un saltanatından sonra ortaya çıkan bu sıkıntılar halefleri sebebiyle daha da kötü bir hâl aldı. Bu kötü gidişatı durdurmak ve devleti tekrar ayağa kaldırmak için İmparator Herakleios köklü reformlarla işe başladı. Ekonomisini kilise aracılığıyla düzeltti. Ardından devlet açısından en önemli olan şeye orduya yöneldi. Bunun için Anadolu toprağı üzerinde 'thema'lar (askerî eyalet) sistemini kurdu. Herakleios, thema ordusunu oluşturduktan sonra ilk olarak Sâsânîlerin üzerine giderek 625'de Hazarların da desteği ile Armenia bölgesinden Suriye'ye kadar ilerledi. Sâsânîlerle savaş devam ettiği esnada Avarlar, 626 yılında Konstantinopolis surları önünde göründü. Fakat Bizans için önemli olan bu iki tehdit bir yanda Herakleios, bir yanda ise Patrik Sergios ve halk tarafından savuşturuldu. 628'de savaş sona erdiğinde imparatorluk, Sâsânî ve Avar tehdidinden tamamen kurtulmuş bulunuyordu; fakat bu huzurlu devre kısa sürdü. Pek az sonra başlayan ve bütün tarihin akışını değiştiren İslâm fetihleri Bizans'ın doğuda kazandığı başarıları silip götürdü. İslâm ordularıyla mücadele sırasında hasta olan Herakleios 641 yılında öldü. Herakleios'un ölümünü kısa bir aile çatışması takip etti. Sonunda duruma torunu II. Konstans (641-668) hâkim oldu.

Herakleios, the son of the Carthage Exorcist Herakleios, revolted against the oppression regime of Emperor Phokas (602-610). Herakleios, who came to Constantinople on October 3, 610 at the beginning of a fleet of North African troops, with the sup-port of the state of Egypt, sat on the Byzantine throne. When the emperor Heraclius appeared on the Byzantine throne, the state was suffering. In fact, these problems af-ter the reign of Justinian I (527-565) were even worse because of his successors. Emperor Herakleios began his work with radical reforms to stop the evil and restore the state. He corrected his economy through the church. Then he turned to the army, the most important thing for the state. For this purpose, the 'thema'(military province) system was established on Anatolian soil. After establishing the Thema army, Herakleios first went to the Sassanids and, in 625, with the support of the Khazars, from Armenia to Syria. In 626, the Avars appeared in front of the walls of Constanti-nople. But these two threats, which were important for Byzantium, were defeated by Heraclesonia, on the one hand by Patriarch Sergios and the people. When the war ended in 628, the empire was completely free from the threat of Sasanid and Avar; but this peaceful circuit was short-lived. Islamic conquests that began very little later and changed the course of all history erased the achievements of the Byzantine Empire in the east. Herakleios died during the struggle against the Islamic armies in 641 AD. Heraclius death was followed by a short family conflict. Finally, the grandson II. Constance (641-668) prevailed.
