F. Soctt Fitzgerald`s This Side of Paradise as a Bildungsroman
Abstract
67ÖZETİlk defa Alman yazar Johann Wolfgang von Goethe tarafından 1794 yılındayazılan `Wilhelm Meister's Lehrjahre' adlı romanla ortaya çıkan Bildungsromantürü, genç bir `erkek' kahramanın ahlaki, psikolojik ve entelektüel gelişimindenibarettir. Geleneksel romandan keskin bir şekilde ayrılan Bildungsroman, `ÇıraklıkModeli' adı verilen bir model sayesinde henüz olgunlaşmamış kahramanının içselgelişimini aşama aşama gözler önüne sermeyi amaçlar.Bu tezde yapılmaya çalışılan şey Fitzgerald'ın ilk roman'ı olan ve çoğunluklatematik açıdan incelenen This Side of Paradise'ın Bildungsroman tekniğibakımından incelenmesidir. Bunu yaparken Wilhelm Meister's Lehrjahre, İngilizedebiyatı'nın en önemli roman yazarlarından biri olan James Joyce'un The Portraitof the Artist as a Young Man ve Compton Mackenzie'nin Sinister Street adlıromanları karşılaştırmalı bir biçimde incelenmiştir.
68ABSTRACTBildungsroman first emerged from German writer Johann Wolfgang vonGoethe?s Wilhelm Meister?s Lehrjahre in 1794 and it focuses on a young male?smoral, psychological and intellectual growing. Bildungsroman sharply diverges fromtraditional novel and aims to show an immature hero?s progressive innerdevelopment through a model called `Apprenticeship Pattern?.The aim of this thesis is to analyze F. Scott Fitzgerald?s first novel, This Sideof Paradise, which was mostly examined thematically, as a Bildungsroman genre. While doing this, This Side of Paradise was studied comparatively with WilhelmMeister?s Lehrjahre, James Joyce?s The Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man andCompton Mackenzie?s Sinister Street. In this novel, adhering to Goethe?s two-partBildungsroman structure and the `Apprenticeship Pattern?, Fitzgerald attempts toshow Amory?s positive progressive development in his character and his inner queststo his reader. What emerges is a classical Bildungsroman.
