A Comparative Study of Utopian and Dystopian Ecofeminism in Marge Piercy's Woman on the Edge of Time (1976), Margaret Atwood's the Handmaid's Tale (1985), and Ursula K. Le Guin's Always Coming Home (1985)

Gündemini cinsiyet rollerinin inşası ve cinsiyetçilik üzerine felsefi tartışmaların belirlediği feminizm, giderek gelişen bir teori olarak cinsiyet ayrımcılığı konusuna farklı yaklaşımlar sağlamıştır. Söz konusu felsefi yaklaşımlar, cinsiyet sorununun ekolojik sorunlardan bağımsız düşünülemeyeceğini öne süren ekofeminizmin ortaya çıkmasına neden olmuştur. Marge Piercy'nin Woman on the Edge of Time (1976), Margaret Atwood'un The Handmaid's Tale (1985), and Ursula K. Le Guin'in Always Coming Home (1985) eserleri, ekofeminist düşünceyi yansıtan önemli edebi eserlere örnektir. Bu tez, ekofeminist temaların bu romanların ütopik ve distopik bağlamlarında nasıl ele alındığını incelemektedir. Birinci bölümde, feminizm ve edebiyat ilişkisi hakkında kısa bilgiler sunulacaktır. Bunları, doğa ve kadın sorunlarına ilişkin, antik dönemlere ve geniş olarak çağdaş ekofeminist çalışmaların bulgularına dayanan açıklamalar izleyecektir. İkinci bölümde, ütopik ve distopik çalışmaların tarihsel bir incelemesi sunulacaktır. Feminizm ve ütopyacılığa dair ilk bölümlerdeki bu teorik incelemeler, tezin sonraki bölümünde edebi eserlerin analizine yönelik tutumun anlaşılmasını destekleyecektir. Üçüncü bölümde, bu romanlarda yaratılan dünyaların ütopik ve distopik modelleri ekofeminist bir bakış açısıyla incelenecektir. Bu çalışmadaki analiz, kadın, erkek, doğa ve ekosistemi sömüren hiyerarşik sistemlere ilişkin ütopik ve distopik görüşleri içermektedir. Böylelikle bu yazarların kadın ve doğa konularına yönelik ekofeminist bakış açılarının ortaya konulması amaçlanmaktadır.

Feminism, whose agenda is determined by the construction of gender roles and philosophical discussions on sexism, has provided different approaches to the issue of gender discrimination as a gradually developing theory. These philosophical approaches have led to the emergence of ecofeminism, which argues that the gender issue cannot be considered independently of ecological issues. Marge Piercy's Woman on the Edge of Time (1976), Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale (1985), and Ursula K. Le Guin's Always Coming Home (1985) exemplify significant literary works that reflect ecofeminist thought. This thesis examines how ecofeminist themes are processed in the utopian and dystopian contexts of these novels. In the first chapter, brief details about the relationship between feminism and literature will be introduced. These will be followed by discussions about the nature and women's issues that are based on ancient periods and broadly on the indications of contemporary ecofeminist studies. In the second chapter, a historical review of utopian and dystopian works will be presented. The theoretical reviews regarding feminism and utopianism in these initial chapters will support figuring out the attitude toward the analysis of the literary works in the thesis. In the third chapter, the utopian and dystopian models of the worlds created in these novels will be analyzed from an ecofeminist viewpoint. The analysis in this study contains utopian and dystopian views of women, men, nature, and the hierarchical systems that exploit the ecosystem. In this way, it is intended to demonstrate the ecofeminist perspectives of these writers on women and nature issues.
