Investigation of Erciş Fault and Its General Properties

Abstract

Yüzüncü Yıl Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, Jeoloji Mühendisliği Anabilimdalı bünyesinde Yüksek Lisans Tezi olarak hazırlanan bu çalışmada, Van Gölü'nün kuzeyinde bulunan Erciş Fayı incelenmiş ve genel özellikleri hakkında bilgi verilmeye çalışılmıştır.Doğu Anadolu Bölgesi neotektonik dönem içerisinde sıkışma rejimi altında kaldığından, birçok aktif fay sistemini bünyesinde bulundurmaktadır. Bu çalışma kapsamında özellikle Van ili çevresinde yıkıcı depremlere neden olan Erciş Fayı incelenmiştir. Çalışmada inceleme alanına ait topoğrafik haritalara inceleme alanının genel morfolojik görünümünün yansıtılabilmesi amacıyla, Uzay - Mekiği Radar Topografik Görevi (Shuttle Radar Topografic Mission; SRTM) yükseklik modelleri kullanılmıştır. Gerek yükseklik modelleri ve gerekse topoğrafik paftalar yardımıyla Erciş Fayı'nın yüzey kırıkları incelenmeye çalışılmıştır. Çalışma sahasının sade bir jeolojik haritası hazırlanmış ve saha gözlemleriyle bu birimler ve fay düzlemleri hakkında bilgi toplanmıştır.Ayrıca, çalışma bölgesinde meydana gelen tarihsel ve aletsel döneme ait depremler çeşitli kaynaklardan incelenmiş, kabartı haritaları üzerine işlenerek depremlerin meydana getirdiği çizgisellikler üzerine araştırmalar yapılmıştır.Sonuç olarak, Erciş Fayı'nın birbirine paralel birçok segmentten meydana geldiği belirlenmiş ve genellikle Pliyo - Kuvaterner yaşlı çökeller içerisinde Erciş Fayı'na ait izler belirlenmiştir. Çizgisel analizler sonucu son yıllarda bu bölgede meydana gelen depremlerin Erciş Fayı'na yakın bölgelerde oluştuğu gözlenmiştir.Anahtar kelimeler: Erciş Fayı, Tektonik, SRTM, Van.

In this investigation which was prepared as a master thesis in Geology Department, Institute of science, Yüzüncü Yıl University. Erciş Fault which is in the eastern part of Lake Van, has been invastigated and information about its general properties has been given.Since East Anatolian Region had been under a deppressive process of neotechtonic period, it incorporates various fault systems within its body. In the scope of our study, the chief focus of our concern has been Erciş Fault which has caused destructive earthquakes especially in Van and its environs. In our investigations Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission (SRTM) altitude models have been used in order to reflect a general morphological view of investigation. The surface fissures of Erciş Fault were investigated bye the aid of both altitute models and topographic portions. A plain geological map of the area of investigation was prepared and information related with observations of the area, fault plane and various other concepts have been collected.In addition, in the area of study, earthquakes recorded historically and sismographically in the area have been investigated based on various sources, they were transfered to the carving maps and graphicalities were analized.In conclusion, Erciş Fault was determined to have originated from different segments parallel to each other and traces period. After graphic analises, we came to the conclusion that earthquakes occuring in this region were formed in the nearby areas of Erciş Fault.Key words: Erciş Fault, Tectonics, SRTM, Van.
