Determining Trainee Mathematics and Physics Teacher's Misconceptions Towards Vector Spaces Theory

Abstract

Bu çalışma, Fen-Edebiyat Matematik, Orta öğretim Matematik, İlköğretim Matematik ve Fen Edebiyat Fizik Bölümünde okuyan üniversite 2. sınıf öğretmen adaylarına uygulandı. Amaç, öğretmen adaylarının lineer cebir dersinin temel bir bölümü olan vektör uzayları konusundaki kavram yanılgılarını tespit etmektir. İlk olarak Yüzüncü Yıl Üniversitesi'nde araştırmacı öğretmen yöntemiyle sınıf içi gözlemler yapıldı. Daha sonra lineer cebir dersini veren 2 öğretim görevlisi ile mülakat yapıldı. Bu çalışmalar doğrultusunda ilköğretim bölümünde 15 soruluk bir ön çalışma testi uygulandı. Bu test sonucunda da 8 soruluk bir teşhis testi geliştirildi. Geliştirilen bu teşhis testi 4 bölümde toplam 105 öğrenciye uygulanmıştır. Uygulanan teşhis testi, yapılan gözlem ve mülakatlar sonucunda elde edilen veriler sınıflandırılarak değerlendirildi. Değerlendirilme sonucunda öğretmen adaylarının vektör uzayları konusunda birçok kavram yanılgılarına sahip oldukları sonucuna varılmıştır.Öğretmen adaylarının sahip oldukları en önemli kavram yanılgıları; Vektör uzayı aksiyomlarını karıştırıyor ve dağınık olarak kullanıyorlar. İki vektör uzayı eşitliğinin gerçekte iki kümenin eşitliği olduğu bilgisinden yararlanamıyorlar. Alt uzay aksiyomlarını karıştırıyor veya dağınık olarak kullanıyorlar. Alt uzay ile üst uzayı soyut anlamda birbirinden net olarak ayıramıyorlar. Skalerlerin toplamıyla, vektörlerin toplamını birbirine karıştırıyorlar. Skalerlerin kendi aralarındaki çarpımı ile skaler çarpımının farklı olduğunu göremiyorlar. Bir vektörün bağımlı ve bağımsız değişkenlerini birbirinden ayırt edemiyorlar.Bu sonuçlar ışığında öğretmen adaylarının vektör uzayları konusunda kavram yanılgılarına ve eksik bilgilere sahip olduğu sonucuna varılmıştır.

This study was applied to a group consisting of second year trainee teachers of elementary mathematic education department, secondary mathematic education department of the education faculty mathematics department and physics department of the arts and science faculty. The main purpose of this study is determining misconceptions of trainee teachers about vector spaces subject which is a main part of lineer algebra lesson. First of all, classroom observations were made with the investigator teacher method in Yüzüncü Yıl University. After that an interview was made with two instructors who give lineer algebra lesson. Through these studies a pre-test, consisting fifteen questions, was applied. At the result of this test a diagnostic test, consisting eight questions, was developed. The diagnostic test was applied to 105 students in four sections. The diagnosis test was evaluated by classifying the datas, which had been got as a result of observations and interview. As a result of the evaluation, we decided that the trainee teachers have many misconceptions about the vector spaces.The most important misconceptions of the trainee teachers are they do not know the whole axioms to be vector spaces. They are not able to use that two equal vector space are two equal ordinary set. They confuse the subspace axioms or they use them disorganised. They cannot distinguish subspace and general space clearly. They confuse the total of scaler and vector. They also cannot distinguish that which components.According to these results we concluded that trainee teachers have misconceptions and insufficient knowledge about the vector spaces subject
