The Political Background of American Horror Cinema: The Case of George Romero Cinema

Abstract

Sinema ortaya çıkışından itibaren seyirciyi eğlendirmek veya propaganda yapmak gibi farklı amaçlar doğrultusunda kullanılmıştır. Bu amaçlar güdülürken içinde bulunduğu dönemden ve yönetmeninden izler taşımıştır. Bundan dolayı sinema çoğu zaman politik bir duruşa sahip olmuştur. Savaş, kriz, devrim gibi politik dönüşümlerin yaşandığı dönemlerde sinema bu durumdan oldukça etkilenmiştir. En eski ve popüler film türlerinden biri olan korku türü de zaman zaman politik bir söyleme sahip olmuştur. İnsan doğasının en temel duygularından biri olan korku, beyaz perdeye bazen bir öteki, düşman, canavar olarak bazen de en yakınlarımız olarak yansımıştır. Korku sineması için önemli bir yere sahip olan George A. Romero da sinemasını politik bir altyapı üzerine kurmuş ve filmlerinde kapitalizmi, ırkçılığı, militarizmi ve muhafazakarlığı mütemadiyen eleştirmiştir. Bu çalışmanın amacı da Night of the Living Dead (1968), The Crazies (1973) Dawn of the Dead (1978), filmlerini odak noktasına alarak Amerikan korku sinemasının politik arka planına eğilmektir. Bu bağlamda ideolojik film çözümleme yöntemi kullanılarak seçilen filmlerin dönemin sosyo-kültürel yapısını, sınıfsal ilişkilerini ve Romero'nun politik duruşunu nasıl temsil ettiği saptanmaya çalışılmıştır. Araştırmanın sonucunda Amerikan korku ve Romero sinemasının arkasında ideolojik faktörlerin oldukça etkili olduğunu saptanmıştır. Amerikan korku sineması temelini muhafazakâr düşüncelerini yüceltme üzerine inşa ederken Romero'nun ise aile, ordu ve milliyetçilik gibi muhafazakâr değerleri yerdiği analiz edilmiştir.

Since its emergence, cinema has been used for different purposes such as entertaining the audience or making propaganda. While pursuing these aims, it has carried traces of the period and its director. Therefore, cinema has often had a political stance. In periods of political transformations such as war, crisis and revolution, cinema has been highly affected by this situation. Horror, one of the oldest and most popular film genres, has also had a political discourse from time to time. Fear, one of the most basic emotions of human nature, has sometimes been reflected on the silver screen as an other, enemy, monster, and sometimes as our closest ones. George A. Romero, who has an important place in horror cinema, built his cinema on a political infrastructure and constantly criticized capitalism, racism, militarism and conservatism in his films. The aim of this study is to focus on Night of the Living Dead (1968), The Crazies (1973), Dawn of the Dead (1978), and to examine the political background of American horror cinema. In this context, it was tried to determine how the films used in the period showed the socio-cultural structure, class structure and Romero's political stance. As a result of the research, the ideological elements behind American horror and Romero cinema have been effectively influential. American horror cinema aims to glorify conservatism on the basis that Romero's conservative values such as family, army and faith, while constructing, analyze the place.
