Prevalence of Intestinal Parasites in Patients Applying To Health Sciences University Van Training and Research Hospital With Gastrointestinal Complaints

Abstract

Bu çalışmanın amacı, Sağlık Bilimleri Üniversitesi Van Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesine başvuran hastalarda bağırsak parazitlerinin prevalansını belirlemektir. Çalışmaya, Eylül 2021–Aralık 2021 tarihleri arasında SBÜ Van Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesine gastrointestinal şikâyetlerle başvurup dışkı istemiyle Parazitoloji Laboratuvarına yönlendirilen 18-90 yaş aralığında toplam 300 hasta, kontrol grubuna herhangi bir kronik hastalığı ve gastrointestinal şikâyeti olmayan 100 hasta dahil edildi. Çalışmaya dahil edilen hastalardan ve kontrol grubundaki bireylerden alınan dışkı örnekleri, nativ-Lugol ve modifiye asit-fast boyama yöntemi ile incelendi. Çalışmada hasta grubundaki 300 hastanın 41'inde (%13,3), kontrol grubundaki 100 bireyin ise yedisinde (%7) bağırsak paraziti saptandı. Hasta grubunda en yüksek oranda B. hominis (%5,7) saptandı. Saptanan diğer türlerden E. coli %3, G. intestinalis %2,7 ve Cryptosporidium spp. %2,3 oranında bulundu. Ayrıca parazit görülme sıklığı ile karın ağrısı (P=0,022) ve mide bulantısı (P=0.029) arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir ilişki saptandı. Sonuç olarak; gastrointestinal şikayetleri olan hastalarda bağırsak parazitlerinin toplumda hala önemli bir sağlık sorunu olduğu ve bu hasta grubunda intestinal parazitlerin mutlaka akla getirilmesi gerektiği sonucuna ulaşıldı.

The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasites in patients admitted to Health Sciences University Van Training and Research Hospital. A total of 300 patients between the ages of 18-90 who applied to SBU Van Training and Research Hospital with gastrointestinal complaints and were referred to the Parasitology Laboratory between September 2021 and December 2021, and 100 patients without any chronic disease and gastrointestinal complaints in the control group were included in the study. Stool samples taken from patients included in the study and individuals in the control group were analyzed by native-Lugol and modified acid-fast staining methods. In the study, intestinal parasites were detected in 41 (13.3%) of 300 patients in the patient group and in seven (7%) of 100 individuals in the control group. The highest rate of B.hominis (5.7%) was found in the patient group. E. coli 3%, G. intestinalis 2.7% and Cryptosporidium spp. 2.3% were found among the other species detected. In addition, a statistically significant correlation was found between the incidence of parasites and abdominal pain (P=0.022) and nausea (P=0.029). As a result; It was concluded that intestinal parasites are still an important health problem in the society in patients with gastrointestinal complaints and intestinal parasites should definitely be considered in this patient group.
