Abstract
Philip Larkin, The Less Deceived eseriyle saygın bir üne kavuşmuş ve ölümünden sonra yayımlanan mektup ve şiirleriyle bu ününü perçinleştirmiş savaş sonrası bir İngiliz şairidir. Poetry Book of Society ve The Time tarafından son zamanlarda gerçekleştirilen araştırmalar sonucunda Larkin, savaş sonrası dönemin en büyük şairi seçilmiştir. Larkin'i bu kadar önemli kılan, kullandığı ana temalarla toplumun ortak duygularını paylaştığı kendine has tarzıdır.Bu çalışma, Larkin'de gelenek ve din ana temalarını inceler. Larkin geleneğe karşı olduğunu söyler fakat kendi şiir tarzını oluştururken bazı edebi akımları (Romantizm, The Movement gibi) ve sanatçıları benimser ve onları eserlerine yansıtır. Larkin'in gelenek karşıtlığı ise edebi anlamda Modernizm, toplumsal anlamda da evlilik ve dinde en çok görülür.Bu çalışma ayrıca Larkin'in dinselliği ile onun eserlerinde din temasını ele alır. Şair, ne dindar olduğunu ne de dinle ilgili yazdığını söyler. Fakat ?Water?, ?Solar?, ?Church Going?, ?Faith Healing?, ?The Explosion?, ?High Windows? ve ?Vers de Société? gibi şiirlere bakıldığında, şairin din konusuna uzak olduğunu söylemek imkânsızdır.
Philip Larkin is an English post-war poet who gained a respectable fame following his publication of The Less Deceived, and who secured his prominence with his posthumously published letters and poems. Two recent surveys conducted by Poetry Book Society, and The Time resulted Larkin as the greatest post-war poet in England. What makes Larkin so prominent is his `Larkinesque? style which embodies his main themes that share the common sense of his community.The aim of this study is to examine tradition and religion in the poetry of Philip Larkin. Larkin declares that he is against tradition, but in the course of making his style, he embraces some literary movements (Romanticism, The Movement etc.) and artists and reflects them in his poetry. Larkin?s resistance to tradition, however, appears in Modernism, as well as in cultural values such as marriage and religion.This study also discusses Larkin?s religiosity and the religion theme in his poems. He pronounces that he is neither religious nor does he write about religion. It is, however, improbable to say he is totally distinct to religion as suggested in his poems such as ?Water?, ?Solar?, ?Church Going?, ?Faith Healing?, ?The Explosion?, ?High Windows? and ?Vers de Société?.
