John Steinbeck'in 'Gazap Üzümleri' Romanında Amerikan Toplumu ve Anti Kapitalist Canlanmanın Fotoğrafik Bir Sunumu

Abstract

Bu çalışma John Steinbeck'in Gazap Üzümleri adlı eserindeki sosyal atmosferi, ekonomik karışıklığı ve çiftçilerin dramatik yaşamlarını konu edinir. 1930'larda Amerika Birleşik Devletleri Büyük Buhran denilen etkili bir mali kriz ile karşılaştı. Bunalımdan sonra kapitalist sistem kendini sadece insanların ekonomik hayatında değil ayrıca sosyal hatta dini yaşamlarında bile bir güç olarak tesis etti. This study is focused on the social atmosphere, the economic turbulence and the dramatic lives of the farmers in John Steinbeck?s The Grapes of Wrath. In 1930s, the United States of America faced an influential economic crisis called The Great Depression. After the depression the capitalist system constituted itself as a power not only in economic life but also in social and even in religious lives of people. Therefore, it became turbulence for only the poor farmers rather than owners.As a successful and meticulous observer, John Steinbeck did not ignore the social atmosphere in this period and exposed how cruelties, harassments, intimidations and repressions were applied on poor people for the sake of making more profit. Steinbeck pictures them in a realistic way, uses a plain and public language and projects a different future to change their destiny. Hence he emphasizes the theme of hope as the source of resistance and thus reveals the attempts at revolt and anti-capitalistic resurrection against landlords and owners.
