Evaluation of Nutritional Habits of University Students and Determination of Obesity Frequency: Van Example
Abstract
Bireylerin %20.9'unun sigara içtiği, %13.5'i alkol kullandığı belirlenmiştir. Öğrencilerin Akdeniz diyetine uyumlarına bakıldığında %17.7'sinin düşük, %63.5'inin orta, %18.8'inin ise iyi olduğu belirlenmiştir. Araştırmada öğrencilerin Akdeniz diyeti kalite indeksine uygunluklarının orta düzeyde olduğu görülmüştür. Genel olarak öğrencilerin öğün atladıkları belirlenmiştir. Bireylere doğru beslenme eğitimleri verilmeli ve sağlıklı beslenme alışkanlıkları kazandırılmalıdır. Anahtar Kelimeler: Üniversite öğrencileri, Beslenme Alışkanlıkları, Akdeniz Diyeti, Obezite
This cross-sectional study was carried out at Van Yüzüncü Yıl University in the 2021-2022 academic year, with the participation of a total of 729 healthy students, 388 males and 341 females who are studying at Van Yüzüncü Yıl University. The aim of the study was to determine the general nutritional habits, prevalence of underweight, overweight and obesity, food preferences, health-related behaviors, food consumption frequency of university students and to evaluate the suitability of students diets for the Mediterrancan diet. Height, weight, waist and hip circumference measurements of the students were taken in accordance with the Anthropometric Standardization Reference Manual (ASRM) and International Biological Programme (IBP) references. Body Mass Index (BMI) was determined by using height and weight measurements in accordance with the references of the World Health Organization. On the other hand, abdominal adiposity was evaluated by waist and hip circumference measurements. In addition, eating habits, food consumption frequency, health-related behaviors and compliance with the Mediterranean Diet Quality Index (KIDMED) of students were determined with the help of a survey. When the BMI values of the students were analyzed, it was determined that 10.2% were underweight, 70.9% were normal, 16.2% were overweight, and 2.9% were obese. When the main meal skipping status of individuals was analyzed, it was seen that the most skipped main meal was lunch with a rate of 64.9%. When the reasons for skipping meals were analyzed, 43% of the students stated that they skipped meals due to not feeling like it. It was seen that 3.9% of the students were on a diet. It was determined that 20.9% of the individuals smoked cigarettes and 13.5% used alcohol. When the compliance of the students with the Mediterranean diet was analyzed, it was determined that 17.7% of them were low, 63.5% were moderate, and 18.8% were good. In the study, it was seen that the compliance of the students with the Mediterranean diet quality index was at a medium level. In general, it was determined that students skipped meals. Proper nutrition education should be given to individuals and healthy eating habits should be gain. Key Words
