Postmodernism in Kazuo Ishiguro's Novels - a Pale View of Hills, an Artist of the Floting World, the Remains of the Day, the Unconsoled, When We Were Orphans and Never Let Me Go

Abstract

20. yüzyılın başından bu yana toplum, felsefe, fizik, sanat, mimari, bilim ve teknoloji gibi pek çok alanda köklü değişimler meydana gelmiştir. Bu değişimlerde postmodernizmin de etkisi vardır. Bilenen ve kabul gören tüm doğruları derinden sarsan yapısıyla modernizme hem bir devamlılık niteliği oluşturan hem de ciddi bir alternatif olarak varlığını kabul ettiren postmodernizm, tüm bilim dallarını etkisi altına alan, sanat dallarını bütünleştiren ve edebiyat alanında çarpıcı sonuçlar oluşturan bir etkiye sahiptir. Edebî türler arasında bu akımdan en çok etkilenen tür romanlardır. Postmodern romanda kullanılan teknikler ve yöntemler, alışılagelmiş ve geleneksel romanların özelliklerinden oldukça farklıdır. Bu çalışmada öncelikle postmodernizm kavramına değinilerek postmodern edebiyatın ve postmodern romanın başat özellikleri açıklanmaya çalışılacaktır. Bu çalışmanın asıl amacı Çağdaş İngiliz Edebiyatının en önemli yazarlarından biri olan, 2017 yılı Nobel Edebiyat ödülü sahibi Kazuo Ishiguro'nun romanlarındaki postmodern unsurları ve teknikleri örneklerle ele almaktır. Romanlarının çoğunda hafıza, bireyler arası iletişimsizlik ve savaş konularını ele alan, belleğin güvenilmez bir şey olduğuna inanan yazar, insan ruhunun derinliklerindeki zıtlaşmayı alışılmadık yöntemlerle harmanlar. Bu kargaşanın sonunda ortaya çıkan durumu karakterler üzerinden aktarır. Okurlarını metinlerin arasında asla görülmeyen gizemli sözleriyle etkileyen ve eserlerini açıklık, duruluk, dolaysızlık ve saydamlık üzerine kuran Ishiguro, sıra dışı olayları, dünya ötesi imgeleri bile düzgün, açık ve sade bir dille anlatır. Böylelikle çağdaş dünyanın varoluşsal kayıplarını ve yaşamın sarsıntılarını etkili biçimde okuruna aktarmayı başarır. Kazuo Ishiguro'nun romanları, güncel sorunlara değinmez aksine anlattığı hikâyeler okuru yaşadığı zamandan uzaklaştırır ve yazar bu uzaklaşma sayesinde toplumsal sorunlar çok daha etkili şekilde aktarılır. Bu çalışmada yazarın metinlerarasılık, ironi, üstkurmaca gibi pek çok postmodern unsuru eserlerinde nasıl kullandığı irdelenecek ve yazarın pek çok postmodern özelliği bünyesinde barındıran altı romanı incelenerek eserlerinin postmodern romanlara örnek romanlar olduğu kanıtlanacaktır. Postmodernism also has a big effect on the radical changes that occurred in many fields such as society, philosophy, physics, art, architecture, science and technology since the beginning of the twentieth century. With its structure that shakes all the known and accepted truths deeply, postmodernism creates both a continuity and a serious alternative to modernism affecting all branches of science, integrating other branches of art and creating striking results in the field of literature. Among the literary genres, the genre that is most affected by this situation is the novel. The techniques and methods used in postmodern novels are quite different from the features of conventional novels. In this study, first of all, the concept of postmodernism will be mentioned and the dominant features of postmodern literature and postmodern novel will be tried to be explained. The main purpose of this study is to examine postmodern elements and techniques in the novels of Kazuo Ishiguro - one of the most important writers of Contemporary English Literature- winner of the 2017 Nobel Prize in Literature. The author, who believes that memory is an unreliable thing, deals with the issues of memory, miscommunication and war in most of his novels and blends the conflicts in the depths of the human soul with unusual methods. He conveys the situation that emerged at the end of this turmoil to his reader through the characters of the story. The author who impresses his readers with his mysterious words that are never seen among the texts and who builds his works on clarity, immediacy and transparency, tells extraordinary events, even extraterrestrial images, in a neat, clear and simple language. In this way, he manages to convey the existential losses of the contemporary world and the shocks of life impressively. Kazuo Ishiguro's novels do not touch on current problems, on the contrary, the stories he tells to take the reader away from the time he lives, and the author deals with the existential problems he wants to tell much more effectively thanks to this distance. In this study, it will be examined how the author uses many postmodern elements such as intertextuality, irony, and metafiction, and by examining the author's six novels that contain many postmodern features, it will be proved that his works are exemplary novels for postmodern novels.
