The Impact of the Use of the Supplementary Book on Teaching Fractions Subject on the 4th Grade Primary School Math Class Student Achievement

Abstract

Bu araştırma ilkokul 4. sınıf matematik dersi 'kesirler' konusunun işlenişi sırasında öğretmenin yardımcı kitap kullanmasının öğrenci başarısına nasıl bir etkisi olacağını ortaya koymak amacıyla yapılmıştır. Bu çalışmanın ülkemizdeki okullarda ders anlatımı sırasında kullanılan yardımcı kitapların öğrenci başarısı üzerindeki etkisini ortaya çıkarması yönüyle öncü çalışmalardan biri olacağı düşünülmektedir. Bu araştırmada deneysel yöntem kullanılmıştır. Araştırma modeli 'ön-test son-test kontrol gruplu' deneysel modele göre desenlenmiştir. Bu araştırma, 2012-2013 eğitim-öğretim yılında Van ilinin Merkez ilçesinde bulunan bir devlet okulunda yapılmıştır. Deney grubundan 31 öğrenci ve kontrol grubundan da 31 öğrenci olmak üzere, toplam 62 öğrenci araştırmaya katılmıştır. Araştırmacı tarafından geliştirilen 20 maddelik Ön-Bilgi Matematik testi ile önce öğrencilerin matematik dersi ön bilgiler ölçülmüştür. Ardından yine araştırmacı tarafından geliştirilen ve yine 20 çoktan seçmeli sorudan oluşan konu başarı testi gruplara, öğretimler öncesinde ön-test, 16 ders saatlik öğretim sonrasında son-test, son-testten 2 ay sonra ise kalıcılık testi olarak uygulanmıştır. Araştırmanın bulgularına göre, yardımcı kitap kullanılarak anlatılarak ders işlenen deney grubunun akademik başarısının, ders kitabıyla öğretim gören kontrol grubunun başarısından daha fazla arttığı görülmüştür. Kalıcılık üzerinde ise, yine yardımcı kitap destekli öğretimin ders kitabına dayalı öğretime göre daha etkili olduğu ortaya çıkmıştır. This study is made to prove the impact of teachers using supplementary book while teaching 'the fractions' subject to the primary school 4th grade classes. This study is considered to be one of the pioneering works in our country which will reveal the impact of using supplementary books while lecturing. In this study, experimental method is used. Research model is arranged according to pre-test and post-test with control group experimental method. This study is made in a government school in 2012-2013 in the center of Van. 31 students in experiment group and 31 students in control group, totally 62 students attended to the research. The prior knowledge of math of the students is measured with the 20 ıtems pre-test developed by the researcher. Later 20 ıtems of multiple choice achievement test is carried out to the groups as a pre-test before the teaching, a post-test after 16 hours of teaching and a permanence test two months later than the post-test. According to the findings of the research; the academic success of the experiment group which is taught by using the supplementary book is more than the success of the control group which is taught with the course book. For the permanence, it is found out that supplementary book supported teaching is more effective than the course book teaching. Key Words Course book, fractions, math teaching, supplementary book.
