Love and Class Conflict in D.H.Lawrence's Works

Abstract

Lawrence, roman, kısa hikâye ve şiirler yazan modern dönemin önemli yazarlarındandır. Kadın ve erkek arasındaki ilişkiyi irdelediği için ahlaksızlıkla suçlanır. Eserleri daha da ileri gidilerek pornografik bulunur.Hayatı zorluklar içinde geçer, o dönemde çevresindeki hayatlara pek benzemez. Uzun yıllar sağlık problemleri yaşar. Genç yaşta tüberkülozdan hayatını kaybeder.Lawrence'ın çocukluk ve gençlik hatıraları eserlerinin çoğunda ona ilham kaynağı olur. David Herbert Lawrence is an important, modern author who wrote novels, short stories and poetry. Particularly his novels were found shocking by many of the readers and the authorities of his time. He was accused of immorality due to his treatment of the relationship between men and women. They were even labelled as as pornografy.Lawrence?s own life was inconventional and did not follow the usual pattern of people? lives at that time. He also suffered from health problems, especially diseases of the lungs, and died when still quite young.Lawrence?s early life gave him ideas for several of his works. Lawrence had a very close relationship with his mother and her death was a big shock to him. He called these years sick year. In 1912 Lawrence fell in love with Frieda. She left her husband and ran away with him. He never had an easy life. He had frequently to travel. They were accused ofspying for the German. Despite hard living conditions, he continued writing but his health was getting worse and worse. He died of tuberculosis in Vence, France, on March 2nd at the age of fortyfive. In 1960 Lawrence?s name became known all over the world. Lady Chatterley?s Lover was published privately in 1928 but could not be sold in bookshops because of the obscene love scenes.In most of Lawrence?s works `love and class conflict? is the major theme of his books.It is not coincidence that the interlinked themes of industrialism, class identity, and division on the one hand, and adulterous love on the other, were also important in Lawrence?s own life. In his partly autobiographical essay, ?Nottingham and the Mining Countryside,? Lawrence portrays the area in which he was born and raised as marked by a curious division. He described Eastwood, a mining village near Nottingham, in contrasting terms, ?a curious cross between industrialism and the old agricultural EnglandFor Lawrence, town and country, industry and nature, love and class, old and new, were startlingly close to each other and yet also hopelessly separated. Lawrence always felt this conflict deeply.
