Anglo-American Poetry in 1950`s: Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Gregory Carso, Philip Larkin and Ted Hughes

Abstract

Bu çalışmaya, yirminci yüzyılın başında yaşanan savaşların, çağdaş yazar ve şairlerin üzerindeki etkileri incelenip örneklendirilerek ve 1950'ler Amerika ve İngiltere'sinin sosyal ve ekonomik altyapısı özetlenerek başlandı. Çalışmanın ikinci bölümünde, klasik dönemden Postmodern döneme, etkili olmuş sanat ve eleştiri akımları özetlenerek, İngiliz ve Amerikan şiir gelenekleri tarih şeridi içindeki etkinlikleri kısaca incelendi. Çalışmanın üçüncü bölümünde 1950'lerde, İngiliz ve Amerikan şiirinin genel özellikleri anlatıldı ve Amerika'daki 'Beat Akımı' ile İngiltere'deki 'The Movement' akımının ayrıntılı özellikleri mercek altına alındı. Dördüncü bölümde, ait oldukları şiir ekollerini en iyi temsil eden Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Gregory Corso, Philip Larkin ve Ted Hughes biyografik ve sanatsal yönleriyle incelenerek şiirlerinden seçkilerle örneklendiril ve çağdaş/postmodern şiire getirdikleri yenilikler tartışıldı. Çalışmanın son bölümünde, söz konusu şairlerin ortak yazınsal ve sanatsal özellikleri tartışılarak, çağdaş/postmodern şiire katkılarını yansıtan ilkeler belirlendi. This study started by examining and exemplifying the effects of wars at the beginning of the twentieth century on contemporary writers and poets, with a brief summary of the social and economic background of 1950s America and England. In the second part of the study, the influential art and criticism movements from the classical times to the Postmodern period were summarized, and their activities within the historical flow of British and American poetic traditions were briefly examined. In the third part, the general characteristics of British and American poetry in the 1950s were explained and detailed features of 'Beat Current' in America and 'The Movement' movement in England were examined. In the fourth chapter, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Gregory Corso, Philip Larkin and Ted Hughes, who are the best representators of the schools of poetry they belong to, are examined with their biographical and artistic aspects. Their innovations in contemporary / postmodern poetry are illustrated and exemplified by a selection of their poems. In the last part of the study, the common literary and artistic characteristics of the mentioned poets are discussed and the principles reflecting their contributions to contemporary / postmodern poetry are determined.
