An Inquiry on Karl R. Popper's Understanding of the Method of Social Sciences

Abstract

Bu çalışmanın amacı, Karl R. Popper'ın sosyal bilimlerde yöntem anlayışı üzerine bir inceleme yapmaktır. Popper doğa bilimlerinde kullandığı yöntemini sosyal bilimlere uyguladığından, sosyal bilimlere ilişkin yönteminin anlaşılması doğa bilimlerinde kullandığı yöntemin anlaşılmasıyla mümkündür. Popper'ın bilimsel yöntem anlayışı sistematik bir bütünlüğe sahiptir. Onun doğa bilimlerine uyguladığı yöntemde kilit rol oynayan eleştirel akılcılık ve yanlışlamacı yaklaşım biçimi, sosyal bilimler yönteminde de aynı işleve sahiptir. Eleştirel akılcılık ve yanlışlamacı yaklaşım, doğa bilimlerinde hataların elenmesiyle doğruya yaklaşma olanağı sağlamaktadır. Bu yaklaşım biçimi, sosyal bilimler alanında da yaşanılan sorunlara eleştirel bir bakış açısıyla çözümler üretmektedir. Böylelikle yapılan hatalardan ders çıkarılma imkânı var olur. Popper eleştirel akılcılığın toplumsal yaşama uygulanmasını da öngörmektedir. Ancak bu yönteminin toplumsal hayata uygulanabilmesi için özgür düşüncenin hâkim olduğu bir toplum olmalıdır. Bu toplum, onun tarafından açık toplum olarak isimlendirilir. Açık toplumlar, eleştirel akılcılığın egemen olduğu toplumlardır. Böylelikle açık toplumlar sosyal bilimler alanında daha yaşanılır bir dünya arayışı içinde olmakla belirginleşmektedir.

The aim of this study is to inquiry on Karl R. Popper's understanding of the method of Social Sciences. Since he applied the method of natural sciences to social sciences, it is possible to understand Popper's method of social sciences by comprehending his method of natural sciences. Popper's understanding of scientific method has a systematic integrity. Like Popper's methodology of natural sciences, the concepts of critical rationality and falsificationism have an important role in the method of social sciences. Critical rationality and falsificationist approach allows natural sciences to truths by eliminating errors. As in natural sciences, this approach produces solutions to the problems arising in social sciences by a critical point of view. Thus, Popper's methodology facilitates the scientists to learn from the errors. Popper also conceives of the application of critical rationality to social life. On the other hand, to apply the method to social life requires a society in which free thinking prevalis. Popper calls this kind of society as an open society. Open societies are defined as the societies where critical rationality is dominant. Thus, open societies emerge as a society in which seeking a more livable world is distinct.
