An Analysis on Conflict and Conflict Processes in Aslı Der's Children's and Youht Novels
Abstract
Life itself is built on conflict. For this reason, children need to be sensitised to understanding and resolving conflict from an early age. In addition to various studies in formal or informal educational settings, works of children's literature are among the tools that support children's conflict resolution skills. In this regard, the conflict and conflict processes in Aslı Der's children's novels were analysed in our study. In this study, which is structured in qualitative research design, document analysis was used to collect data and content analysis was used to analyse the data. The objects of the study are 8 novels written by Aslı Der for children and adolescents. These novels were analysed in terms of conflict, conflict types and conflict processes and the results were presented in tables. According to the results, man-man conflict has the highest frequency among the conflict types in the analysed novels, while man-nature conflict has the lowest frequency. Furthermore, the conflict between technology and nature did not occur in the novels. Emotions came to the fore as the main causes of conflict, while attitudes had the lowest frequency. It was found that characters were mostly effective in conflict resolution. While conflicts mostly had a transformative power in terms of outcome, outcomes resulting in loss were the least frequent. In conclusion, it can be said that the forms and solutions of conflicts in Aslı Der's novels aimed at children and adolescents, and the outcomes they reveal, have a quality that will support the psychological, social, cognitive and moral development of child readers.
