Analysis of Hope and Happiness Levels of High School Students According To the Personal Characteristics and Various Variables

Abstract

İnsanın tarih süresince başlıca uğraşı; dünyayı, diğerlerini, kendini anlaması ve mutluluğa ulaşması olmuştur. Yüzlerce yıldır mutluluğa ulaşmaya çalışan insanların; hayatta kalmasına yardım eden psikolojik yapı umuttur. Arayışta olan her bireyin kendine ait kişilik özellikleri bulunmakta; bireyin umut etme ve mutluluk düzeyini etkilemektedir. Bu çalışmanın amacı lise öğrencilerinin umut ve mutluluk düzeylerinin kişilik özelliklerine, çeşitli demografik değişkenlere göre farklılaşıp farklılaşmadığını ve mutluluğu hangi değişkenlerin yordadığını incelemektir. Araştırmanın örneklemini 2018-2019 eğitim-öğretim yılında Van Özalp ve Tuşba ilçelerinde, farklı liselerde okuyan 696 öğrenci oluşturmaktadır. Veri toplamak amacıyla; Kişisel Bilgi Formu, Temel Kişilik Özellikleri Ölçeği, Sürekli Umut Ölçeği, Oxford Mutluluk Ölçeği Kısa Formu kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın sonucunda; İlçe değişkenine göre küçük ve sınır ilçede yaşayan öğrencilerin umut düzeyinin; uyumluluk, sorumluluk ve deneyime açıklılık düzeylerinin merkez ilçede yaşayan öğrencilerden daha yüksek olduğu; kız öğrencilerin olumsuz değerliliklerinin erkek öğrencilerden daha düşük, sorumluluğunun ise daha yüksek olduğu bulunmuştur. Kardeş sayısı arttıkça deneyime açıklık, uyumluluk, sorumluluk, olumsuz değerlilik kişilik özelliklerinin düzeyinin arttığı ve aileleriyle yaşayan öğrencilerin yurtta yaşayan öğrencilerden olumsuz değerliliklerinin daha yüksek olduğu bulunmuştur. Lise türlerine göre araştırma değişkenlerinde farklılıklara rastlanmıştır. Korelasyon analizi sonuçlarına göre umut ölçeği, alt ölçekleri ile mutluluk ölçeği arasında pozitif anlamlı ilişki bulunmuştur. Mutluluk ölçeği, umut ölçeği ve alt ölçekleri ile kişilik ölçeğinin alt boyutları olan olumsuz değerlilik, duygusallık arasında negatif anlamlı ilişki; dışadönüklük, uyumluluk, sorumluluk deneyime açıklık arasında pozitif anlamlı ilişki bulunmuştur. Yapılan regresyon analizi sonucunda; deneyime açıklık, duygusallık, sorumluluk kişilik özelliklerinin mutluluğun anlamlı yordayıcıları olduğu görülmüştür. Bulgular ilgili literatür ışığında tartışılmış, önerilerde bulunulmuştur.

Throughout history, people try to understand the world, others, themselves, and to reach happiness. In this process, hope is the main psychological construct that helps them to survive. Every individual has specific personality traits that affect the individual's level of hope and happiness. The present study aims to examine whether the levels of hope and happiness of high school students differ according to their personality traits and demographic variables, and to picture which variables predict happiness. The sample consists of 696 students from different high schools in Van's Özalp and Tusba districts in the 2018-2019 academic year. For data collection, Demographic Information Form, Basic Personality Traits Inventory, Trait Hope Scale, Short Form of Oxford Happiness Scale were used. The results indicate that the students in Özalp have higher levels of hope, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness to experience than the students in Tusba; the negative valance levels of female students were lower, and their conscientiousness levels were higher. It was found that as the number of siblings increased, the levels of agreeableness, conscientiousness, openness to experience, and negative valence increased, and the negative valence levels of students living with their families were higher than students living in dormitories. Differences were found in research variables according to high school types. According to the results of the correlation analyses, positive significant relationships were found between the hope scale, its subscales, and the happiness scale. Also, negative significant relationships between happiness, hope, and its subscales and negative valence and neuroticism were found. Also, positive significant relationships were found between extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness to experience. The regression analysis revealed that openness to experience, neuroticism, and conscientiousness were significant predictors of happiness. The findings were discussed in the light of the relevant literature and recommendations were made.
