Financial Problems Encountered by Hotel Businesses and Solution Suggestions: a Study in Van Province

Abstract

Turizm sektöründe faaliyet gösteren otel işletmeleri ekonomik alanda önemli roller üstlenmektedirler. Otel işletmelerinin finansal alanda sorun yaşaması durumunda, bu durum hem otel işletmesini hem de ülke ekonomisini olumsuz etkileyebilmektedir. Rekabet ortamında başarı sağlamaya ve devamlılığını sürdürmeye çalışan otel işletmeleri, yaşadıkları finansal sıkıntıları aşmak durumundadır. Bu çalışmanın temel amacı Van ilindeki otel işletmelerinin karşılaştığı finansal sorunları tespit etmek ve çözüm önerileri sunmaktır. Bu kapsamda nitel araştırma yöntemi kullanılarak yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme formuyla veriler elde edilmiştir. Araştırma kapsamında görüşmeler Van ilinde faaliyet gösteren otel işletmelerinin finans ve muhasebe sorumlularıyla yüz yüze gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırma sonucunda otel işletmelerinin özsermaye yetersizliği veya işletme sermayesi yetersizliğinden kaynaklanan sorunlar, kredi temininde yaşanan sorunlar, finansal yönetim yetersizliğinden kaynaklanan sorunlar, ekonomi politikaları ve mali durumdan kaynaklanan sorunlar ile karşılaştığı tespit edilmiştir. İşletmelerin bu sorunlar ile nasıl başa çıktığı ve bu sorunlarla ilgili beklentileri sonuç ve tartışma kısmında ayrıntılı bir şekilde ele alınmıştır. Böylece araştırmanın finansal sorunları belirlenmesi ve bu sorunların ortadan kaldırılması kapsamında öneriler içermesi, işletmelere ve bu alanda çalışan diğer araştırmacılara katkı sunmaktadır.

Hotel businesses operating in the tourism sector play important roles in the economy. If hotel businesses experience financial problems, this may negatively affect both the hotel business and the country's economy. Hotel businesses trying to achieve success and maintain their continuity in a competitive environment have to overcome the financial difficulties they experience. The main purpose of this study is to identify the financial problems faced by hotel businesses in Van and to offer solutions. In this context, data was obtained with a semi-structured interview form using the qualitative research method. Within the scope of the research, interviews were conducted face to face with the finance and accounting officers of hotel businesses operating in Van province. As a result of the research, it was determined that hotel businesses encountered problems arising from insufficient equity capital or working capital, problems in obtaining loans, problems arising from financial management inadequacy, economic policies and financial situation. How businesses deal with these problems and their expectations regarding these problems are discussed in detail in the results and discussion section. Thus, the fact that the research includes suggestions for identifying financial problems and eliminating these problems contributes to businesses and other researchers working in this field.
