Being a Woman in the Countryside: Women's Daily Life Practices in the Slums of Van

Abstract

Bu tez çalışmasının konusu taşra kentinde kadınların gündelik faaliyetlerinde edindikleri deneyimleri ve kentin çevre mahallelerinde kenti nasıl deneyimledikleridir. Kavramsal çerçevede gündelik yaşam sosyolojisi, kent-taşra ekseninde taşra kavramının müphemliği ve kadınların gündelik yaşamlarında taşrayı nasıl deneyimledikleri açıklanmaya çalışılmıştır. Ataerkil normların kadınların gündelik faaliyetlerine nasıl yansıdığı, kentin çevre mahallelerinde kamusal alanı nasıl deneyimledikleri soruları çalışmanın temel problemini oluşturmaktadır. Bu sorular çerçevesinde, Van kentinde yapılan bu çalışma taşra toplumunda kadınların kent, mahalle ve gündelik yaşam deneyimlerini baz alarak kadınların toplumsal varlığını ortaya çıkarmayı amaçlamaktadır. Bu doğrultuda görüşme yapılan kadınların bakış açıları, duygu ve düşünceleri üzerine derinlemesine bilgi almak için nitel çalışma yürütülmüştür. Bu çerçevede yapılan mülakatlardan elde edilen veriler doğrultusunda görüşmeci kadınların kentin çevre mahallelerini nasıl deneyimlediklerine dair bulgular yorumlanmıştır. Sonuç olarak; kadınların gündelik yaşam pratiklerinin ataerkil normları pekiştirdiği, kent yaşamına ilişkin mekân çalışmalarının kadınların kamusal alan deneyimi önünde handikaplar oluşturduğu görülmüştür.

The subject of this thesis is the experiences of women in their daily activities in the provincial city and how they experience the city in the surrounding neighborhoods of the city. In the conceptual framework, the sociology of everyday life, the ambiguity of the concept of province in the city-province axis and how women experience the province in their daily lives are tried to be explained. The questions of how patriarchal norms are reflected in women's daily activities and how they experience public space in the peripheral neighborhoods of the city constitute the main problem of the study. Within the framework of these questions, this study conducted in the city of Van aims to reveal the social existence of women in the provincial society based on women's urban, neighborhood and daily life experiences. In this direction, a qualitative study was conducted to get in-depth information on the perspectives, feelings and thoughts of the women interviewed. In line with the data obtained from the interviews conducted in this framework, the findings on how the interviewee women experience the peripheral neighborhoods of the city were interpreted. As a result, it has been observed that women's daily life practices reinforce patriarchal norms and that space studies on urban life create handicaps for women's experience of public space.
