The Seroprevalence of Hepatitis E Virus in the City of Van
Abstract
Yamaç N, The seroprevalence of Hepatitis E virus in the city of Van, University of Y.Y.U. Institute ofMedical Sciences, Department of Medical Microbiology, Master Thesis, Van, 2010. This study was carriedout in Microbiology Laboratory of the Medical Faculty Research Hospital of Yuzuncu Yil University. Theregistries and test results of a total of 175 patients (97 females and 78 males), who referred to various clinicswith hepatitis suspicion and whose hepatitis E virus antibodies were analyzed between 1 January 2006 and 5March 2009, were retrospectively investigated. The serum samples sent to the Microbiology Laboratory wereanalyzed in terms of HEV IgG class antibodies by micro-ELISA method. Of the total of 175 patients 13 revealedanti-HEV IgG positive. When HEV seroprevalence was investigated the 97 females, 10 (10,3%) revealed HEVpositive whereas three of 78 males (3,8%) were HEV positive comprising 7,4% of all of the patients. Inconclusion, the findings concerning the seroprevalence of HEV in Van were found to resemble the results ofprevious studies conducted in the region. This rate was found to be higher among adults, people with lowsocioeconomic status, and residents of rural areas.Key Words: Hepatitis E virus, Van City, Seroprevalence
