Evaluation of the 4th Grade English Coursebook in Terms Ofteacher Views

Abstract

Bu araştırma 4. sınıf İngilizce ders kitabını öğretmen görüşleri doğrultusunda değerlendirmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Bu araştırmada, karma araştırma yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Araştırma, 2021- 2022 öğretim yılında Van ili merkez ilçelerinden olan Edremit, Tuşba ve İpekyolu'nda görev yapmakta olan 115 İngilizce öğretmeni ile yürütülmüştür. Araştırmada veri toplamak amacıyla 'Ders Kitabı Değerlendirme Anketi' ve 'Yarı-Yapılandırılmış Görüşme Formu' kullanılmıştır. Araştırma kapsamında 12 İngilizce öğretmeni ile ayrıca görüşme yapılmıştır. Çalışmaya katılan öğretmenler, kitapta kullanılan görsellerin, kitabın genel görünüşünün ve yazı puntosunun iyi düzeyde olduğunu düşünmektedir. Öğretmenlerin çoğunluğu kitabın içeriğinin kazanımlara ve öğretim ilkelerine uygun olduğu görüşüne sahiptir. Öğretmenlerin kitabın alıştırma ve etkinliklerine ait maddelere ise orta düzeyde katıldıkları belirlenmiştir. Öğretmenler, alıştırma ve etkinliklerin öğrencileri motive etmesi gerektiğini ve kitapta kullanılan alıştırmaların çeşitlendirilmesi gerektiğini düşünmektedir. Ders kitabı, öğretim sürecinde en önemli materyallerden biridir ve ders kitabı hazırlama sürecinin öğretim programı, kazanımlar, öğrenci ve öğretmen ihtiyaçları dikkate alınarak yapılması gerekmektedir. Kitabın içeriğinde kullanılan alıştırma ve etkinliklerin yanı sıra kitabın biçimsel özelliklerine de önem verilmelidir. Özellikle küçük yaş grupları için hazırlanan ders kitaplarında kullanılan alıştırma ve etkinliklerin öğrenciyi öğrenmeye özendirmesi ve aynı zamanda eğlendirmesi gerekmektedir. This research aims to evaluate the fourth grade English textbook in line with the teachers' opinions. Mixed method was used in this study. The research was conducted with 115 English teachers working in Edremit, Tuşba and İpekyolu districts of Van province in the 2021 - 2022 academic year. In order to collect data in the study, 'Textbook Evaluation Questionnaire' and 'Semi-Structured Interview Form' were used. The interviews were conducted by 12 English teachers working in the primary school. Teachers think that the visuals, the book's overall appearance and font size are sufficient. The majority of teachers are of the opinion that it is in accordance with the achievements and teaching principles. Teachers moderately agree that exercises and activities are sufficient. They argue that exercises and activities should motivate students and should be diversified more. Considering that the textbook is one of the most important materials in the teaching process, the textbook preparation process should be prepared by considering the curriculum, achievements, student's and teacher's needs. The physical property of the book should be prepared as careful as its content. Exercises and activities should encourage students to learn and it should also entertain them at the same time.
