Ngugi Wa Thiong'o ve Kültürel Direniş

Abstract

Bu tezin amacı Ngugi wa Thiong'o'nun Gikuyu kültürünü koruma çabasındaki büyük etkisini ortaya koymak ve Batı medeniyetinin kültürel uygulamalarına ve normlarına karşı çıkışını ele almaktır. Bir yazar olarak Ngugi, Kenya'nın sömürge dönemi ve sömürge sonrası durumunu yaşamış ve bu iki dönemi eserlerine yansıtmıştır. Bu özelliği onu, sömürge sonrası dönemde eserlerini İngilizce yazıp yayınlayan birinci kuşak Batı Afrikalı yazarlar arasında önemli bir figür yapar.Bu çalışma Ngugi wa Thiong'o nun seçilmiş dört eserinin incelemesini içerir. The River Between ve Weep not Child `da yazar sömürge dönemi Kenya'sında yaşanan kültürel baskıya odaklanır. Petals of Blood ve Devil on the Cross Kenya'nın sömürge sonrası döneminde kaleme alınmış eserler olup, temel olarak sömürge sonrası baskı altındaki toplumun kültürel bozulmasına vurgu yaparlar.İlk iki romanda Ngugi, Kenya'nın kültürel bağımsızlığını, Batının kültürel değerleri ve medeniyet anlayışına karşı çıkarak ortaya koyar. The River Between ve Weep not Child da sömürgeciye karşı koymak adına halkının kendi öz kültürüne dönüşü için güçlü bir istek görülür. Petals of Blood ve Devil on the Cross yazarın Batılı burjuva kültürü ve değerlerine karşı çıkışını yansıtır. Modernleşmenin gelişi ve kapitalist seçkin sınıfın işçi/köylü sınıflarıyla mücadelesi, Ngugi'nin kültürel karşı çıkışında önemli bir yer tutar. İlk iki romanı diğer iki romanla karşılıklı incelediğimizde, Kenya'nın kültürel durumunun öncesi ve sonrasını karşılaştırma olasılığını bulabiliriz. This thesis attempts to elucidate the strong influence of Ngugi wa Thiong?o?s struggle on preserving the authentic Gikuyu culture and resisting to the cultural practices and the norms of the Western civilization. As a writer Ngugi has experienced the colonial and post colonial situation of Kenya and employed both these phases in his works. This makes him an important figure among East Africa?s first generation writers who began to write and publish their works in English at the end of the colonial era.All these are discussed through Ngugi wa Thiongo?s four selected novels. In The River Between and Weep not Child, the author focuses on the colonial times of cultural oppression in Kenya. Petals of Blood and Devil on the Cross narrate post-independence era of Kenya and they mainly stress the neo-colonial situation of a cultural degeneration in an oppressed society.In the first two novels, Ngugi wa Thiong?o tends to view Kenyan cultural independence by resisting to the Western cultural values and standards of civilization. In The River Between and Weep not Child we can see a strong desire for returning to the authentic culture of his community in order to resist the colonizer. Petals of Blood and Devil on the Cross reflect the author?s cultural resistance to the Western bourgeois culture and values. The coming of modernisation and the struggle between the Capitalist elite and the working/peasant class occupies a significant place in Ngugi?s cultural resistance. When we analyse the first two novels with the last two, we can have the possibility to compare the situation of Kenyan culture in terms of before and after. In Ngugi?s viewpoint, a new colonizer is taking over Kenya and cultural resistance is the only way for establishing a true independent Kenya.Key Words: Ngugi wa Thiong?o, Culture, Resistance, Colonialism, Postcolonialism
