Relationship Between Presenteeism and Organizational Alienation: a Research on Hotel Employees in Van Province
Abstract
Turizm sektörü, hızlı gelişen sektörlerden biri olma özelliği ile gelişmiş ve gelişmekte olan ülkeler tarafından yoğun ilgiye sahiptir. Turizm sektörünün emek-yoğun özellik taşıması ve sektördeki rekabetin istihdam edilen işgücü kalitesine odaklanması; müşteri memnuniyetini sağlamaya daha çok önem verilmesine ve turizm sektöründe hizmet veren otel işletmelerini, hizmetin sağlamasında temel unsur olan işgörenler ile rekabet avantajı sağlamaya yöneltmektedir. İşletme ihtiyaçları olan nitelikli iş gücünü sistemlerine entegre etmek, ellerinde tutmak ve yeni gelecek olan iş görenlerle uyum içerisinde tutmak gibi zorlu süreçlerin içerisinden geçmektedir. Bu araştırmada presenteizm ile örgütsel yabancılaşma ilişkisinin ölçülmesi amaçlanmaktadır. Bu doğrultuda araştırmanın evreni Van İlinde Faaliyet Gösteren Otel işletmeleri olarak belirlenmiş olup bu işletme çalışanlarından anket tekniği kullanılarak veriler toplanmıştır. Bu araştırmadan elde edilen bulgulara göre presenteizm ile örgütsel yabancılaşma arasında pozitif yönlü yüksek düzeyde anlamlı bir ilişki tespit edilmiştir. Aynı zamanda çalışanların presenteizm algısının örgütsel yabancılaşma davranışı üzerinde anlamlı bir etkisi olduğu sonucu elde edilmiştir. Ayrıca katılımcıların demografik özelliklerine yönelik farklılık analizleri yapılmıştır. Çalışmanın sonuç bölümünde ise bulgular tartışılmış olup otel işletmeleri yöneticilerine ve araştırmacılara öneriler sunulmuştur.
The tourism industry attracts great attention from developed and developing countries, being one of the fastest growing sectors. Tourism sector being labour-intensive and the competition in the sector focusing on the quality of the employed workforce leads to more importance given to providing customer satisfaction; and urges hotel businesses serving in the tourism sector to provide competitive advantage to the employees, the main factor in providing the service. They go through difficult processes such as integrating the needed qualified workforce into their systems, keeping hold of them and keeping them in harmony with the new employees. This research aims to measure the relationship between presenteeism and organizational alienation. In this context, target population was determined as the hotel businesses operating in the province of Van, and data were collected from the employees of the business by using the survey technique. According to the findings of this study, a positive and quite a meaningful relationship was revealed between presenteeism and organizational alienation. Besides, it was concluded that presenteeism perceived by the employees had a significant effect on the organizational alienation behaviour. In addition, analyses of differences were conducted regarding the demographic characteristics of the participants. In the conclusion part, the findings were discussed and suggestions were provided to hotel managers and researchers.
