The Place of Emotions in John R. Searle's Emergency Theory

Abstract

Bilinç problemi, zihin felsefesinin en tartışmalı konularındandır. Uzun yıllar bilincin doğası ve yapısına ilişkin çözüm önerileri ileri sürülmesine rağmen daima bir yerlerde eksiklikler kalmıştır. Bunun sebebi ise ya zihin ve bedenin iki farklı töz olarak ele alındığı ya da varolan her şeyin fiziksele indirgendiğinden kaynaklanmaktadır. Bilincin ne olduğuna dair düalizm ve materyalizm gibi geleneksel yaklaşımların yetersiz kalması durumunda yeni görüşler ortaya atılmıştır. Bu çalışma bilinç sorununa kesin çözüm ürettiğini iddia eden John Searle'ün biyolojik doğalcılık kuramını konu edinmektedir. Burada bilince geleneksel yaklaşımlardan farklı olarak öznel bir özellik atfeden ve ontolojik özelliğini de göz önünde bulunduran Searle'ün, bilinci bu özellikleriyle tamamen fiziksel olan dünyaya nasıl konumlandırdığı tespit edilmiştir. Bununla birlikte duyguların evrimi ele alınmış ve Searle'ün felsefesinde duygunun nasıl ele alındığına değinilmiştir. Duyguların doğuştan gelen hissiyatlar olduğunu ve bunun aktarımının yüz ifadeleri olduğunu savunan klasik duygu görüşü ile duyguların sonradan kurgulandığını iddia eden kurgulanmış duygu görüşü derinlemesine incelenmiştir. Sonuç olarak bu çalışmanın amacı, Searle'ün biyolojik kuramı dâhilinde ortaya çıkan belirimci yaklaşımıyla duygu kavramının ilişkisini tespit etmektir.

The problem of consciousness is one of the most controversial topics in the philosophy of mind. Although proposals for solutions to the nature and structure of consciousness have been put forward for many years, there have always been shortcomings somewhere. The reason for this is that either the mind and body are treated as two different things, or everything that exists is reduced to physical. New views have been put forward when traditional approaches to what consciousness is, such as dualism and materialism, are insufficient. This study is the subject of John Searle's theory of biological naturalism, which claims to produce a definitive solution to the problem of consciousness. Here, it has been presented how Searle, who ascribes a subjective feature to consciousness differently from traditional approaches and takes into account its ontological feature, places consciousness in the completely physical world with these features. Besides, the evolution of emotions has been discussed and how emotion is addressed in Searle's philosophy. The classical view of emotion, which argues that emotions are innate sensations and that their transmission is facial expressions, and the fictional view of emotion, which claims that emotions are later fictional, have been studied in depth. As a result, the aim of this study is to determine the relationship between the concept of emotion and the deterministic approach emerging within Searle's biological theory.
