Postmodern Tendencies In Jean-Michel Basquıat's Works

Abstract

Bu tez, Jean-Michel Basquiat'nın eserlerinde postmodern eğilimleri incelemektedir. Başlangıçta modernizm ve modern sanat kavramlarına değinilmiş, bu bağlamda modern resmin özellikleri ele alınmıştır. Modernizmin ardından postmodernizm kavramına geçilmiş, postmodern sanatın belirgin nitelikleri üzerinde durulmuştur. Bu teorik çerçeve, Basquiat'nın sanatsal yaklaşımını anlamak için bir temel sunmaktadır. Jean-Michel Basquiat'nın hayatı ve sanatsal kariyeri, postmodern sanatın dinamikleriyle örtüşen birçok özellik barındırmaktadır. Basquiat'nın New York'ta geçirdiği yıllar, onun sanatını şekillendiren kültürel ve sosyal unsurların anlaşılması açısından kritiktir. Sanatçının eserlerinde, dönemin şehir yaşamının kaotik doğası ve çok kültürlü etkileşimleri açıkça görülmektedir. Özellikle Afroamerikan kültürü, Basquiat'nın çalışmalarında önemli bir rol oynamaktadır. Sanatçı, eserlerinde bu kültürel mirası ve toplumsal meseleleri çarpıcı bir şekilde işlemektedir. Tezin sonunda, Basquiat'nın belirli eserleri postmodern sanatın özellikleri ışığında analiz edilmiştir. Bu analizler, sanatçının postmodern sanat hareketine olan katkılarını ve eserlerinin bu bağlamdaki önemini ortaya koymaktadır. This thesis examines postmodern tendencies in the works of Jean-Michel Basquiat. Initially, the concepts of modernism and modern art are touched upon, and in this context, the characteristics of modern painting are discussed. After modernism, the concept of postmodernism is introduced, and the distinct characteristics of postmodern art are emphasized. This theoretical framework provides a basis for understanding Basquiat's artistic approach. Jean-Michel Basquiat's life and artistic career contain many characteristics that overlap with the dynamics of postmodern art. The years Basquiat spent in New York are critical in understanding the cultural and social elements that shaped his art. The chaotic nature of urban life and multicultural interactions of the period are clearly seen in the artist's works. African-American culture, in particular, plays an important role in Basquiat's works. The artist strikingly handles this cultural heritage and social issues in his works. Basquiat's neo-expressionist style makes his postmodern tendencies even more apparent. The intense use of color, irregular compositions and unique symbols in his works emphasize his neo-expressionist identity. The artist's works draw attention to the inspirations he draws from different disciplines and cultural references. By blending historical figures, popular culture elements and personal experiences, Basquiat has created works that make the viewer think and affect. At the end of the thesis, certain works of Basquiat are analyzed in the light of the characteristics of postmodern art. These analyses reveal the artist's contributions to the postmodern art movement and the importance of his works in this context. Basquiat's works reflect the complexity and multi-layered structure of postmodern art and reveal the artist's individual and social narrative.
