Tekinsizlik Kavramı Bağlamında Philip Ridley Tiyatrosu: The Pitchfork Disney, Mercury Fur ve Leaves Of Glass Oyunları Üzerine Bir İnceleme

Abstract

Bu çalışma, tekinsizlik kavramını merkeze alan çağdaş İngiliz tiyatrosunun dikkat çeken isimlerinden Philip Ridley'nin The Pitchfork Disney, Mercury Fur ve Leaves of Glass adlı üç önemli oyununu kapsamlı bir biçimde incelemektedir. Tekinsizlik, Freud'un 1919 tarihli 'Das Unheimliche' makalesinde tanımlandığı biçimiyle; tanıdık olanın aniden yabancılaşması, bastırılmış olanın geri dönmesi ve bireyde hem korku hem de merak uyandıran bir ruh durumu olarak ele alınmıştır. Bu bağlamda tezde, söz konusu kavram anlatı yapısı çerçevesinde değerlendirilmiş; atmosfer, mekân, karakter inşası ve dil kullanımı gibi unsurlar Freud'un yanı sıra Lacan, Jentsch ve Mark Fisher gibi düşünürlerin yaklaşımlarıyla birlikte ele alınmıştır. The Pitchfork Disney, Presley ve Haley adında iki kardeşin çocukluk travmalarıyla baş başa kaldıkları klostrofobik bir evde geçer. Gerçek ile fantezinin iç içe geçtiği bu dünyada, dışarıdan gelen Cosmo Disney karakteri aracılığıyla tekinsizlik doruğa ulaşır. Mercury Fur, distopik bir gelecekte belleğin yitimi ve şiddetin sıradanlaştığı bir ortamda geçer. Burada tekinsizlik, hem bireysel hem de toplumsal boyutlarda derinleşmektedir. Leaves of Glass ise geçmişle yüzleşmenin kaçınılmazlığına odaklanır. İki kardeş arasında gelişen gerilimli ilişkide, bastırılmış aile sırları yavaş yavaş açığa çıkarken psikolojik çözülme tekinsizlikle birleşir. Ridley'nin In-Yer-Face tiyatrosu estetiğiyle kaleme aldığı bu üç oyun, seyirciyi rahatsız eden temalar, çarpıcı sahneleme biçimleri ve yoğun duygusal atmosferiyle birlikte tekinsizliğin çağdaş tiyatrodaki işlevini sorgulayan önemli örneklerdir.

This study examines three significant plays—The Pitchfork Disney, Mercury Fur, and Leaves of Glass—by Philip Ridley, one of the most prominent figures in contemporary British theatre, through the lens of the concept of the uncanny. As defined by Freud in his 1919 essay Das Unheimliche, the uncanny refers to the sudden alienation of the familiar, the return of the repressed, and a psychological state that evokes both fear and curiosity. Within this context, the thesis explores the narrative construction of the uncanny through elements such as atmosphere, setting, character development, and language, drawing on the theoretical perspectives of Freud, as well as Lacan, Jentsch, and Mark Fisher. The Pitchfork Disney takes place in a claustrophobic house where siblings Presley and Haley confront their childhood traumas, and where the arrival of the enigmatic Cosmo Disney intensifies the uncanny experience. Mercury Fur is set in a dystopian future characterized by memory loss and normalized violence, where the uncanny unfolds on both individual and societal levels. Leaves of Glass focuses on the inevitability of confronting the past; as buried family secrets surface within a tense fraternal relationship, psychological disintegration intertwines with the uncanny. Written in the aesthetic style of In-Yer-Face theatre, these three plays exemplify how disturbing themes, striking staging techniques, and emotionally intense atmospheres serve to interrogate the function of the uncanny in contemporary theatre.
