Abstract

The synthesis and characterization of poly (N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone)-protected platinum (Pt/ PVP) nanoparticles with their employment as highly effective catalysts to liberate hydrogen from hydrolysis of ethylenediamine bisborane (EDAB) is reported here. The nanoparticles are easily synthesized from the reduction of platinum cations in ethanol/water mixture under refluxing. They remain stable for months without any sign of precipitation. They are characterized by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), powder X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Pt/PVP nanoparticles provide the greatest TOF value (166.7 min(-1)) reported so far for the hydrolysis of EDAB. Their activation energy is 81.9 kJ mol(-1) in the same reaction.
