Abstract
The aim of this study was to reveal the reasons of preference of the students who study in Plant and Animal Production departments at Gevaş and Başkale Vocational High Schools, Yüzüncü Yıl University and to be a light on the plans to be made in relation to vocational education. The questionnaire survey was conducted with the method of “under observation” on 178 (50 students from Başkale Vocational High School, 128 students from Gevaş Vocational High School) students in 2017. According to the results, it is understood that 24.16% of the students who participated in the survey has preferred the program because they are interested in the related programs. 13.48% of them have aimed the faculty departments by transit exam. After the graduation, 49.44% and 17.98% of the students have aimed “studying a faculty department” and “establishing their own business”, respectively. Following these, 16.29% of the students have stated the aim of “working in a governmental institution related to their profession”. Among the target variables after graduation from the school, girls generally have wanted to study faculty departments, while boys have not had a high expectation after graduation (p <0.05). As a result of Chi-square analysis, the relationship between gender of the students and the reasons for preference of the program was found statistically significant (p <0.01). According to the results, a significant amount of the students is targeted to continue their studies in faculty departments. This situation should be questioned in terms of training objectives of vocational schools. © 2017, Centenary University. All rights reserved.
