Article The Drawbacks of Rural Development in a Developing Country(1985) Ahmet, A.Article The Mutagenic Effects of Sodium Nitrite and Monosodium Glutamate Used as Food Additives Demonstrated by the Salmonella Microsome Test System(1991) Akin, A.; Sümer, S.In this study, the mutagenicity of sodium nitrite (an antimicrobial agent) and monosodium glutamate (a flavoring agent), which are widely used as food additives, have been evaluated. They were tested for mutagenicity in the Salmonella/microsome test system by employing plate-incorporation test in the absence and presence of rat-liver fraction, S 9. No mutagenic activity was seen for monosodium glutamate in the Salmonella/microsome test system by using the tester strains Salmonella typhimurium TA98, TA100, TA1535 and TA1538. Sodium nitrite was found mutagenic on S. typhimurium TA1535, whereas it was found weakly mutagenic on S. typhimurium TA100, in the presence and absence of rat-liver fraction, S 9.Article Relationship Between Ethylene Adsorption-Isotherms and Gc Retention on Carbowax-Coated Porous Graphite(Friedr Vieweg Sohn verlag Gmbh, 1992) KNOX, JH; CEYLAN, HThe objective of this work was to correlate adsorption isotherms of ethylene at -78-degrees-C on porous graphitic carbon (PGC) with gas chromatographic performance, the intention being that such isotherms could be used as a quality control test for PGC's in general, whether used for GC, HPLC or other adsorptive purposes. GC of test solutes shows that severe peak tailing on bare PGC is removed almost totally by a coating PGC with as little as 0.05% by weight of Carbowax 1500. Surprisingly there is little corresponding change in the ethylene adsorption isotherms, although it is possible to distinguish small differences at surface coverages below 5 % of a monolayer of ethylene. Further work is required to establish a useful QC test.Article The Effect of The Chemical Environment on The K-beta/K-alpha X-Ray Ratio(Editrice Compositori Bologna, 1993) KUCUKONDER, A; Şahin, Y; Büyükkasap, EChemical effects on the Kbeta/Kalpha X-ray intensity ratios were investigated for different constitutions of Ti, V, Fe, Se, Br, Zr and Ce by a Ge(Li) X-ray detector. The vacancies were produced by heavily filtered Am-241 gamma-rays. It is found that the Kbeta/Kalpha X-ray intensity ratios measured with compounds deviated up to 12% from the corresponding values of the pure elements (Ti, V, Fe) are larger than for the others (Se, Br, Zr and Ce).Article The Identification of Streptomyces Isolated From Environmental Soil Samples With Hypal Mycelium Inoculum on Computer-Assisted Identification(Marcel dekker inc, 1994) Atalan, ERepresentatives of Streptomyces strains isolated from environmental soil samples were subjected to identify for the diagnostic characters recommended by Williams el of. (1983b) as a duplicate. Diagnostic characters were tested using a mixture of spores and mycelial fragments, respectively, in order to identify some Streptomyces species and strains on computer assited identification. Most of the marker strains were identified to tile correct clusters. In Contrast, 20 strains out of 38 unknown strains were assigned to any major cluster described by Williams et al. (1983a). Computer-assisted identification procedure has provided reliable identification scores for marker or unknown strains.Article Incoherent-Scattering of 59.5-Kev Gamma-Rays by Light-Elements, Medium-Elements and Heavy-Elements(Editrice Compositori Bologna, 1994) KURUCU, Y; Erzeneoğlu, S; Şahin, Y; Durak, RTotal atomic incoherent-scattering differential cross-sections were determined experimentally for 59.5 keV gamma-rays in Ti, Ni, Zn, Se, Mo, Ru, Cd, Sn, Te, Yt, W and Pb at 120 degrees scattering angle using Ge(Li) detector. The background correction and detection efficiency are also included in the study. The experimental values have been compared with those estimated on the basis of the non-relativistic Hartree-Fock wave functions. Good agreement is observed between theory and experiment.Article K-Beta Intensity Ratios Following Radioactive Decay and Photoionization(Akademiai Kiado, 1994) BUYUKKASAP, E; KUCUKONDER, A; SAHIN, Y; ERDOGAN, HKbeta/Kalpha intensity ratios for Cr, Mn, Fe, Cs and Ba have been measured following radioactive decay and photon excitation. A Ge(Li) detector coupled to an ND66B analyzer was used in the measurements. The Kbeta/Kalpha intensity ratio is affected by the mode of excitation. This effect has a significant influence on Kbeta/Kalpha intensity ratios of 3d shell elements (Cr, Mn, Fe). However, the effect was found smaller for Cs and Ba.Article Phytosociological Investigation on the Macrophytic Vegetation of Lake Van(1994) Behcet, L.Lake Van has salt (soda) characteristics. Nine associations and two subassociations were described. The Potametum pectinati association was described in water. On the lake shore where the salt effect is high, mainly Puccinellietum gigantae, Carici-Menyanthetum trifoliatae and Triglochino-Bolboschoenetum maritimi were described. In places with salt, near to mouth of rivers flowing into Lake Van, Butometum umbellati, Sparganietum erecti, Scorzonereetum parviflorae (in the pasture with bad drainage lying at the back of marshy and muddy areas) and in flooded-beds Alopecuretum arundinaceae were described. Phragmitetum australi was the most tolerated association against ecological factors such as water level, saltness, etc. -English summaryArticle Analysis of Binary-Systems With Rayleigh and Compton Scattered Photons(Marcel dekker inc, 1995) DURAK, R; Ertuğrul, M; Erzeneoğlu, S; Kurucu, Y; Şahin, YArticle Torsion of a Spermatocele(Williams & Wilkins, 1995) ODABAS, O; Aydın, S; Yılmaz, YArticle Pyrolysis of Black Liquor by Using Some Basic Catalysts(Marcel dekker inc, 1995) KUCUK, MMCatalytic pyrolysis for the production of liquids and gases from acidic precipated of black liquor was carried out by using CaO and CuCO3.Cu(OH)2 catalysts. This process has been studied in the temperature range from 463 to 570 K. Pyrolysis of black liquor in the temperature range 463-570 K gave yields which increased from 25.9 to 29.0% as the catalyst percentages was increased from 5 to 20% for CaO. Under the same conditions, the yields of pyrolysis increased from 25.5 to 28.3 for CuCO3.Cu(OH)2.Article An Anatomical Study on the Arteries To the Left Adrenal-Gland of Sheep and Goat(verlag Hans Huber, 1995) KARADAG, HThe arteries supplying the left adrenal gland were determined in 12 mature sheep and goats of both sexes and different breeds. The adrenal branches arose from the first and second lumbal arteries in both species but in one goat they originated from the first lumbal artery while in another from the last intercostal artery. The cranial adrenal branches arose from the celiac artery in 8 sheep, both from the celiac and cranial mesenteric arteries in 3 sheep and from the common celiacomesenteric trunk in 1 sheep. In all goats the cranial adrenal branches originated from the cranial mesenteric artery. The caudal adrenal branches arose singly from the renal artery in all sheep and goats. In both species any branch from the aorta or caudal phrenic arteries to the adrenal gland was not seen.Article Chemotaxonomic and Molecular Methods Applied To the Polyphasic Classification of Streptomyces Strains(1995) Atalan, E.Whole-organism protein of 9 test strains and fatty acid profiles for 12 test strains were analyzed for polyphasic taxonomy of strains isolated from soil samples. Representatives of test strains belonging to the same group were clustered into discrete groups after performing numerical analysis of the whole-organism protein profiles using the Pearson product moment correlation coefficient, and unweighted pair groups by using the arithmetic averages algorithm. Also, the test strains in same group were recovered in three well-separated clusters when the fatty acid profiles were analyzed quantitatively, or rather, by using Euclidean distances of the fatty acids with unweighted pair group method with arithmetic averages algorithm.Article Suicidality in Patients With Panic Disorder: the Association With Comorbidity(Editions Scientifiques Elsevier, 1996) Agargun, MY; Kara, HTo examine the relationship between suicidality and panic disorder, we evaluated 91 patients with panic disorder. Patients with comorbid diagnosis were more suicidal than patients with pure panic disorder. These data suggest that among patients with panic disorder, suicidal behavior is associated with comorbid diagnosis.Article Damping of the Twist Director Fluctuations in the Nematic Liquid Crystal(Elsevier Science Bv, 1996) Karapinar, RThe spectrum of Rayleigh scattered light in the planar aligned nematic liquid crystal octyloxycyanobiphenyl is studied by means of an optical homodyne technique. Experimental values are reported for the damping times and visco-elastic ratios associated with the twist elastic distortions in the nematic region as a function of temperature. The results obtained are discussed in relation to currently available theories concerning the elastic and viscous properties of nematics. It turns out that the measured visco-elastic properties are in reasonable agreement with the theoretical predictions.Article Equilibrium Properties of a Spin-1 Ising System With Bilinear, Biquadratic and Odd Interactions(Elsevier Science Bv, 1996) Temirci, C; Kokce, A; Keskin, MThe equilibrium properties of the spin-1 Ising system Hamiltonian with arbitrary bilinear (J), biquadratic (K) and odd (L), which is also called dipolar-quadrupolar, interactions is studied for zero magnetic field in the lowest approximation of the cluster variation method. The odd interaction is combined with the bilinear (dipolar) and biquadratic (quadrupolar) exchange interactions by the geometric mean. In this system, phase transitions depend on the ratio of the coupling parameters, alpha = J/K; therefore, the dependence of the nature of the phase transition on alpha is investigated extensively and it is found that for alpha less than or equal to 1 and alpha greater than or equal to 2000 a second-order phase transition occurs, and for 1 < alpha < 2000 a first-order phase transition occurs. The critical temperatures in the case of a second-order phase transition and the upper and lower limits of stability temperature in the case of a first-order phase transition are obtained for different values of alpha calculated using the Hessian determinant. The first-order phase transition temperatures are found by using the free energy values while increasing and decreasing the temperature. Besides the stable branches of the order parameters, we establish also the metastable and unstable parts of these curves and the thermal variations of these solutions as a function of the reduced temperature are investigated. The unstable solutions for the first-order phase transitions are obtained by displaying the free energy surfaces in the form of a contour map. Results are compared with the spin-1 Ising system Hamiltonian with the bilinear and biquadratic interactions and it is found that the odd interaction greatly influences the phase transitions.Article The Effects of Some Pesticites on the Activity of Liver and Erythrocyte Enzymes (In Vitro)(Taylor & Francis inc, 1996) Celik, I; Camas, H; Arslan, O; Yegin, E; Kufrevioglu, OIThe effect of pomarsol (tetramethyltriurem disulphide), Benlate 1-(N-Butlycarbomoyl) 2-(Metoxycarboxamido)-bezimidazol, meothrin (alpha-cyanophenoxbenzyl 2.2.3.3.-tetramethyl cyclopropanecarbonylate), Imperator [alpha-cyano 3-phenoxybenzyl-cis, trans-3- (2.2-dichroinyl)-2.2- dimetil research on GOT, GPT (liver enzymes) and CA-I, CA-II (Human erythrocyt) BCA (Bovine erythrocyt). Among the chemicals meothrin, imperator, sumicidin were determined to have inhibitory effect, on bovine CA, human CA and GOT enzymes, but ineffective on GPT enzyme. The I-50 values of chemicals caused inhibition were determined by means of activity percentage [I] diagrams. The values were 3.2x10(-2) M, 3.5x10(-2) M, 2.7x10(-2) M for GOT respectively. The values of same chemicals were 5.8x10(-3) M, 1.00x10(-2) M, 1.22x10(-2) M for CA-I, and 7.11x10(-3) M, 2.68x10(-2) M, 1.22x10(-2) M for CA-II respectively on the order nand, these chemical were 9.25x10(-3) M, 8.65x10(-3) M and 1.63x10(-2) M for bovine CA.Article A Suspected Case of Bilateral Crossed Renal Ectopia or Bilateral Jet Effect(Karger, 1996) Aydin, S; Odabas, O; Yilmaz, Y; Bozkurt, M; Atilla, MK; Onur, D; Dogdu, GACrossed renal ectopia is a relatively unusual congenital anomaly. Bilateral crossed renal ectopia is considered the rarest form of this anomaly. A 19-year-old girl with intermittent flank pain was admitted to our department. Various clinical and laboratory examinations were carried out. Excretory urography showed a normal upper urinary tract anatomy, whereas the distal ends of the ureters crossed each other in the pelvis, which suggested bilateral crossed renal ectopia.Article Affinity To Some Inhibitors of Human Carbonic Anhydrase-1 and Bovine Carbonic Anhydrase(Marcel dekker inc, 1996) Arslan, O; Kufrevioglu, OIThe carbonic anhydrase Isoenzymes employed here have been purifield in high yields by affinity chromatograpy using different affinity gels(Sepharose4B-L-tyrosine-Benzensulfonamide). Inhibition effect of 2-Substituted-1,3,4-Thiadiazole-5-Sulfonamides on human carbonic anhydrase-I (HCA-I) and bovine carbonic anhydrase (BCA) have been determined. It was found that inhibition effects of these compounds on BCA and CA-I were very great.Article The Bias-Dependence Change of Barrier Height of Schottky Diodes Under Forward Bias by Including the Series Resistance Effect(Royal Swedish Acad Sciences, 1996) Turut, A; Bati, B; Kokce, A; Saglam, M; Yalcin, NSchottky barrier height shifts depending on the interfacial layer as well as a change of the interface state charge with the forward bias while considering the presence of bulk (semiconductor) series resistance are discussed both theoretically and experimentally. It has been concluded that the barrier height shift or increase in Schottky diodes is mainly due to the potential change across the interfacial layer and the occupation of the interface states as a result of the applied forward voltage. One assumes that the barrier height is controlled by the density distribution of the interface states in equilibrium with the semiconductor and the applied voltage. In nonideal Schottky diodes, the values of the voltage drops across the interfacial layer, the depletion layer and the bulk resistance are given in terms of the bias dependent ideality factor, n, different from those in literature. These values are determined by a formula obtained for V-i and V-s by means of change of the interface charge with bias.
