DegirmenciArticle Accurately Localizing the Thyroid Tissue in Mature Cystic Teratoma of Ovary by Single-Photon Emission Computerized Tomography/Computerized Tomography(Wolters Kluwer Medknow Publications, 2015) Demir, Yusuf; Ucler, Rifki; Alkis, Ismet; Bulut, GulayA 30-year-old woman with hyperthyroidism was admitted to hospital. Although increased thyroid function was found, the gland was normal in ultrasonography (USG). Additionally, thyroid iodine uptake and Tc-99m pertechnetate scintigraphy was normal. Abdomen USG detected a cystic pelvic mass in left ovary. A whole-body scan was performed 48 hours after oral ingestion of 29.6 MBq (0.8 mCi) 1-131 (iodine-131) revealed a round structure located to the left lower abdomen. Iodine uptake was detected in this cyst which was compatible with functional thyroid tissue demonstrated by SPECT/CT. The patient was underwent surgical operation and histopathology confirmed mature cystic teratoma. Accurate localization and depiction of thyroid tissue in ovary mass was provided with SPECT/CT.Article Adenoid Hypertrophy in Adults: Clinical and Morphological Characteristics(Sage Publications Ltd, 2008) Yildirim, N.; Sahan, M.; Karslioglu, Y.This study compared the aetiology and pathological characteristics of adult and childhood adenoid hypertrophy (AH). Clinical and morphological features and accompanying otolaryngological pathologies were recorded in 40 adults and 23 children undergoing adenoidectomy for obstructive AH. Both AH forms were similar in terms of symptomatology and associated inflammations. There were, however, significant differences in otitis media rate, with effusion and dullness, and retraction in the eardrum both more prevalent in childhood AH. Adult AH was associated with nasal septum deviation in 25.0% of patients. Histopathological features of adenoidal lymphoid tissue were dissimilar in the two groups: numerous lymph follicles with prominent germinal centres was the chief finding in childhood adenoids, whereas adult adenoids showed chronic inflammatory cell infiltration and secondary changes (e.g. squamous metaplasia). These results underline the importance of considering AH as a cause or contributing factor in nasal obstruction and related pathologies in adults and supports the theory that it represents a long-standing inflammatory process rather than being a novel clinical entity.Article Administration of Meloxicam To Cows Experiencing Dystocia Does Not Increase the Incidence of Retained Placenta(Georg Thieme Verlag, 2019) Kunz, F.; Koca, D.; Failing, K.; Wehrend, A.; Sendag, S.Objective The post partum use of analgesics in cows has increased in consequence to society's increased awareness of animal welfare. However, it is known that the post partum administration of a subset of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to cows may lead to an increased rate of retained placenta. Therefore, the aim of this study was clarify, whether a single administration of meloxicam to cows that experienced dystocia results in an increased rate of this disease. Material and methods The study was conducted in 63 Holstein-Friesian cows in 4 farms with random allocation into 2 groups: In animals of the treatment group (n = 27) a single subcutaneous injection of meloxicam (0.5 mg/kg) was administered within 2'8 hours after calving. The animals of the control group (n = 36) received the same volume of a bovine infusion solution (Amynin®, bovine infusion solution, Boehringer Ingelheim) subcutaneously. A clinical examination of the cows was performed on the day of parturition and on the 21st day post partum. Findings on the days in between were obtained by questioning of the farmers. The exact Fisher-test was calculated in order to test for statistical differences between the treatment and control groups. Results In cows of the treatment group, retained placenta was not observed more frequently than in cows of the control group. Conclusion and clinical relevance A single administration of meloxicam to cows that experienced dystocia does not increase the incidence of retained placenta. © Georg Thieme Verlag KG Stuttgart - New York.Article Amniotic Fluid Oxidant-Antioxidant Status in Foetal Congenital Nervous System Anomalies(Sage Publications Ltd, 2018) Cim, Numan; Tolunay, Harun Egemen; Karaman, Erbil; Boza, Baris; Bilici, Mustafa; Cetin, Orkun; Sahin, Hanim GulerObjective This study aimed to evaluate the oxidant-antioxidant status of amniotic fluid in pregnant women with foetal congenital malformations of the central nervous system. Methods We studied pregnant women with foetal congenital nervous system anomalies at 16-22 weeks' gestation (n=36). The control group (n=30) consisted of pregnant women at the same gestational age who underwent amniocentesis, resulting in a normal karyotype. We analysed glutathione, catalase, and malondialdehyde levels in amniotic fluid. Enzyme activation was measured by spectrophotometry. Results The demographic features of the groups were similar in terms of age, parity, body mass index, and gestational weeks. We detected lower glutathione and catalase levels in the foetal congenital anomaly group than in the control group. We detected higher malondialdehyde levels in the foetal congenital anomaly group than in the control group. Conclusion In the organism, the rate of formation of free radicals and their rate of removal are balanced, and this is called oxidative balance. As long as oxidative stability is achieved, the organism is not affected by free radicals. This fact should be kept in mind to avoid any type of teratogenic agent that could lead to congenital disorders.Article Anatomical Characteristics of the Tibial Medullary Canal and Their Implications for Intramedullary Fixation(Sage Publications Ltd, 2003) Tosun, N; Aydinlioglu, A; Akpinar, F; Dogan, A; Islam, CThe use of intramedullary fixation methods in the tibia is limited by the anatomical characteristics of this bone. In this study, the shape and degree of axial lateral rotation of the medullary canal were determined in 45 human dry cadaver bones using X-ray and computed tomography examinations and direct measurement of rotation in inserted nails. Forty bones (88.8%) had slight and five bones (11.1%) had excessive anterior bowing along the tibial shaft. Six of the 45 bones (13.3%) had an extremely narrow medullary canal. Axial lateral rotation was demonstrated in the middle third of the medullary canal, being on average (+/- SD) 32.35 +/- 16.25degrees (range 10 - 75degrees). This study revealed that extreme narrowing of the medullary canal, axial lateral rotation of the medullary canal, and extreme anterior bowing of the tibial shaft are the anatomical characteristics most likely to cause difficulties when using intermedullary fixation in the tibia.Article Anti-Alzheimer, Antiglaucoma, and Antidiabetic Activities of Sainfoin (Onobrychis Buhseana Boiss.)(Wiley-v C H verlag Gmbh, 2025) Jafarova, Shahla; Aydin, Tuba; Isayev, Javanshir; Saglamtas, Ruya; Ozgokce, Fevzi; Kazaz, Cavit; Cakir, AhmetOnobrychis Adans. species, known as 'sainfoin,' are commercially valuable plants cultivated to produce high-protein animal feed. In this study, the ethanol extract of Onobrychis buhseana Boiss., which is widely distributed in Azerbaijan, was subjected to silica gel column and thin-layer chromatography for the first time, leading to the isolation of a new natural hydroquinone oligomer, named buhseanol (1), along with two known compounds, beta-arbutin (2) and an inositol derivative (3). The chemical structure of buhseanol (1) was characterized by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR), carbon-13 NMR, Attached Proton Test NMR, and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Buhseanol (1), beta-arbutin (2), and the ethanol extract were evaluated for their anti-Alzheimer's, anti-glaucoma, and anti-diabetic effects, with both the extract and buhseanol (1) potentially showing these activities. The inositol derivative (3) did not exhibit any of these activities.Article Antioxidant Activity, Total Phenolic Content, and Volatile Component Profiles of Propolis From Eight Turkish Regions(Wiley-v C H verlag Gmbh, 2025) Basturk, Ayhan; Yavas, BerfinThis study aimed to evaluate the volatile component profiles and antioxidant activities of propolis samples collected from eight regions of T & uuml;rkiye. The total phenolic content of propolis samples was found to vary between 5333 and 36967 mg GAE/100 g. 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity of the samples varied from 10.9% to 92.2%, while 2,2-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt radical scavenging activity varied from 193.8 to 1026.0 mu mol Trolox/g. Six of the eight samples exhibited higher antioxidant activities than butylated hydroxytoluene. The predominant volatile components identified in the majority of the propolis samples were alpha-pinene, limonene, bornyl acetate, caryophyllene, alpha-humulene, delta-cadinene, isopentyl acetate, acetic acid, nonanal, m-cymene, and pinocarvone. Principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analyses were applied to the GC-MS data to investigate the trends and clustering in the propolis samples. The propolis samples were divided into four groups using cluster analysis. In the PCA, the first two factors represented 56.39% of the variance. These findings revealed that Turkish propolis has significant antioxidant properties and also contains important volatile compounds. Consequently, Turkish propolis could be considered a potential candidate for incorporation into pharmaceutical and food products.Article Antioxidant Capacity and Phylogenetic Analysis of Twenty Native Grape Cultivars in Siirt Province, Turkey(C M B Assoc, 2018) Fidan, Mehmet; Erez, Mehmet Emre; Inal, Behcet; Pinar, Suleyman Mesut; Altintas, SerdarThe quality of grape cultivars not only depends on the grape cultrvar but also is influenced by the molecular concepts and agro-climatic factors. For this purpose, four different grape cultivars were collected from five different locations in Siirt province (Turkey). Totally twenty different grape cultivars were investigated. In the present study, the antioxidant activity (total phenolic, flavonoid, proanthocyanidin content, DPPH and FRAP activity) in seeds were indicated and phylogenetic analysis (cpDNA;trnL-F region) of twenty native grape cultivars were imestigated to construct their phylogenetic tree. According to reported data on antioxidant activity and content of phytochemicals, all cultivars exhibited different values from each other, but Rutik and Gad?v cultivars were found as significantly higher in comparison to others According to bioinformatics analysis, twenty grape cultivars were distributed into six different major groups. Rutik and Sevkeye cultivars exhibit significant distinction from other grape cultivars. The phylogenetic analysis was also associated and supported with the results of obtained data from bioactivity. The bioactivity and phylogenetic analysis were firstly identified and quantified in these grape cultivars, however, with regard to obtained data from the current study, the grape cultivars grown in Siirt province were indicated significant and valuable results and as a result, these cultivars have to be evaluated before extinction.Article Aortic Root Replacement - for Reoperation of Dissecting Aneurysm of the Interventricular Septum(Texas Heart inst, 2005) Kutay, V; Yakut, CDissection of the interventricular septum due to an aneurysm of the left sinus of Valsalva is a very rare cardiac condition. Although the negative effects of synthetic chemicals were recorded, they are still used as agrochemical. The production of non-toxic synthetics makes their use particularly safe. The goal of our research is to evaluate antimicrobial activity of previously synthesized Poly(p-phenylene-1-(2,5-dimethylphenyl)-5-phenyl-1H-pyrazole-3,4-dicarboxy amide) (poly(PDPPD)) against selected Gram-negative, Gram-positive bacteria, and fungus. In addition, the possible genotoxic effects of the poly(PDPPD) were searched on Triticum vulgare and Amaranthus retroflexus seedlings using Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) marker. The binding affinity and binding energies of the synthesized chemical to B-DNA were simulated with AutoDock Vina.It was observed that the poly(PDPPD) affected most of the organisms in a dose-dependent manner. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was the most affected species in tested bacteria at 500 ppm with 21.5 mm diameters. Similarly, a prominent activity was observed for tested fungi. The poly(PDPPD) decreased root and stem length of the Triticum vulgare and Amaranthus retroflexus seedlings and also reduced the genomic template stability (GTS) value of Triticum vulgare more than Amaranthus retroflexus. The binding energy of poly(PDPPD) was found in range of -9.1 and -8.3 kcal/mol for nine residues of B-DNA.Article Assessment of Covid-19 Trauma Responses. Who Has Been More Traumatized During the Pandemic(Masson Editeur, 2022) Cim, Emine Fusun Akyuz; Kurhan, Faruk; Dinc, Dilem; Atli, AbdullahBackground and Objective. - To evaluate the effect of cognitive and sociodemographic characteristics of healthcare and non-healthcare workers on their traumatic responses to the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods. - Data were collected using an online survey between August-September 2020. The survey included the following scales: Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Anxiety Sensitivity Index (ASI), and Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R). Traumatic responses were categorized into three types: avoidance (IESR_A), intrusion (IES-R_I), and hyperarousal (IES-R_H). Results. - The study included a total of 672 participants, comprised of 399 (59.4%) men, and 273 (40.6%) women with a mean age of 39.25 +/- 933 years. The results indicated that women had higher IES-R_I (r=.5.78, p < 0.001), IES-R_A (r = 4.47, p < 0.001), and IES-R_H (r =.5.20, p < 0.001) scores compared to men. Patients with a history of psychiatric diseases had significantly higher IES-R_I (r = -3.82, p < 0.001), IES-R_A (r = -2.00, p < 0.05), and IES-R_H (r = -4.06, p < 0.001) scores compared to patients with no history of psychiatric diseases. Non-healthcare workers had significantly higher IES-R_A (r = -2.69, p < 0.01) scores compared to healthcare workers. Conclusion. - Female gender and a positive history of psychiatric diseases were found to lead to an increase in the frequency of all three traumatic responses to COVID-19. Contrary to expectation, being a healthcare worker was not found as a factor facilitating trauma response formation in our study. (C) 2022 Elsevier Masson SAS. We aimed to investigate the association between bilirubin and novel electrocardiography (ECG)-based ventricular repolarization parameters. Methods: We enrolled 201 healthy men with mild hyperbilirubinemia (group 1) and 219 healthy men with normal bilirubin levels (group 2). The Tpeak-Tend (Tp-e) interval (defined as the interval from the peak of the T wave to the end of the T wave), corrected (c) Tp-e interval, QT interval, cQT interval, and Tp-e interval/QT interval ratio were measured from leads V-5 and V-6 with 20 mm/mV amplitude and 50 mm/second rate. Results: The Tp-e interval, cTp-e interval, and Tp-e interval/QT interval ratio were significantly lower in group 1 compared with group 2. The cTp-e interval showed a significant negative correlation with total bilirubin, conjugated bilirubin, and unconjugated bilirubin. The cTp-e interval (odds ratio [OR], 0.900; P=.002) and Tp-e interval/QT interval ratio (OR, 0.922; P=.04) were significantly associated with mild hyperbilirubinemia. Conclusion: We showed the association of mild hyperbilirubinemia with decreased novel ECG-based ventricular repolarization parameters.Article Asymmetric Crying Facies and Congenital Hypothyroidism(Freund Publishing House Ltd, 2001) Kurtoglu, S; Çaksen, H; Per, H; Narin, N; Üzum, KA congenital asymmetric crying facies (ACF) is caused by congenital hypoplasia or agenesis of the depressor anguli oris muscle. Associations of this facial defect with major congenital anomalies have been reported, most commonly in the cardiovascular system and less frequently involving the genitourinary, musculoskeletal, cervicofacial, respiratory, and rarely, the endocrine system. It is also well known that congenital hypothyroidism may be associated with other congenital malformations, especially with cardiac defects. Two newborn infants who had ACF associated with congenital heart defect and congenital hypothyroidism are described. To the best of our knowledge the association of ACF and congenital hypothyroidism has not previously been published.Article The Bibliometric Analysis of the Postgraduate Theses Written on Medical Parasitology in Türkiye(2024) Aydemir, S.; Barlık, F.; Abdurrahman, E.; Yılmaz, H.; Kaçak, K.Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the theses prepared in the field of medical parasitology in Türkiye and to reveal the importance given to the science of parasitology in the groves of academe and to raise awareness in this field. It is characterized by abnormal facial development, fragility of the bones with relatively mild trauma, cranial abnormalities including widely opened sutures and fontanels frontal bossing, wrinkled skin, finger and nail abnormalities. In the literature, pyknodysostosis was reported only as case reports. Here, we describe a pyknodysostotic child with a bilateral parietal epidural hematoma, caused by a relatively mild head trauma, He was operated on, and the hematoma was evacuated through two different parietal craniotomies, We reported this case, since pyknodysostosis is a rare disease, and our case is the first one who had a surgical intervention as well as being the first with an epidural hematoma in pyknodysostosis.Article Bilateral Galactocele in a Male Infant(Freund Publishing House Ltd, 2001) Cesur, Y; Çaksen, H; Demirtas, I; Kösem, M; Üner, A; Özer, RA galactocele is a rare benign breast lesion usually occurring in females during or following lactation. These lesions are a rare cause of breast enlargement in infants and children. In this article we present a 10 month-old boy who was admitted with a two-month history of bilateral progressive breast enlargement, and diagnosed as having galactocele. Our purpose was to emphasize the importance of galactocele as a benign condition in the differential diagnosis of gynecomastia in childhood.Article Biochemical Changes Associated With Temporomandibular Disorders(Sage Publications Ltd, 2019) Demir, Canser Yilmaz; Ersoz, Muhammet ErenObjective To assess vitamin D, parathyroid hormone, calcitonin, calcium, phosphorus and magnesium levels in patients with versus without temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). Methods This prospective observational study included patients with TMDs and age-matched healthy controls. TMDs were diagnosed via physical and radiologic examination, and serum levels of 25 (OH) vitamin D, parathyroid hormone, calcitonin, calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus were determined. The impact of age, sex and seasonal variations in serum 25 (OH) vitamin D levels was controlled by the inclusion of age, sex and date-matched control patients. Results The study included 100 patients, comprising 50 patients with TMDs and 50 control patients. No statistically significant between-group differences were found regarding age or sex. No statistically significant between-group differences were found in terms of serum 25 (OH) vitamin D, calcitonin, calcium, magnesium or phosphorus levels. Parathyroid hormone levels were statistically significantly higher in patients with TMDs versus healthy control patients. Conclusion In patients with temporomandibular disorders, increased parathyroid hormone levels in response to vitamin D deficiency was significantly more prominent. These data suggest that, in patients with temporomandibular disorders, vitamin D deficiency should be assessed and corrected.Article Boswellic Acid and Betulinic Acid Pre-Treatments Can Prevent the Nephrotoxicity Caused by Cyclophosphamide Induction(Maik Nauka/interperiodica/springer, 2024) Berkoz, Mehmet; Ciftci, OguzhanCyclophosphamide (CYP) is a chemotherapeutic drug used to treat various cancers. However, its clinical use is limited due to severe organ damage, particularly to the kidneys. While several phytochemicals have been identified as potential therapeutic targets for CYP nephrotoxicity, the nephroprotective effects of boswellic acid (BOSW) and betulinic acid (BET) have not yet been investigated. Our study used 42 rats divided into six equal groups. The study included six groups: control, CYP (200 mg/kg), CYP+BOSW20 (20 mg/kg), CYP+BOSW40 (40 mg/kg), CYP+BET20 (20 mg/kg), and CYP+BET40 (40 mg/kg). The pre-treatments with BOSW and BET lasted for 14 days, while the application of cyclophosphamide was performed intraperitoneally only on the 4th day of the study. After the experimental protocol, the animals were sacrificed, and their kidney tissues were isolated. Renal function parameters, histological examination, oxidative stress, and inflammation parameters were assessed both biochemically and at the molecular level in kidney tissue. The results showed that oxidative stress and inflammatory response were increased in the kidney tissue of rats treated with CYP, leading to impaired renal histology and function parameters (p < 0.05). Oral administration of both doses of BET and especially high doses of BOSW improved biochemical, oxidative, and inflammatory parameters significantly (p < 0.05). Histological studies also showed the restoration of normal kidney tissue architecture. BOSW and BET have promising biological activity against CYP-induced nephrotoxicity by attenuating inflammation and oxidative stress and enhancing antioxidant status.
