Abstract

The structure of Sevgi Soysal's Noon-Time in Yenisehir allows a variety of themes to emerge, among which are the financial rise and fall of characters, the metaphor of the poplar tree, generation gap and the opposition against changing trends. The disturbance felt by the older generation of the Republic because of the changing circumstances of the present is related through each character's individual stories. The novel also focuses on the opposition against parental authority adopted by the revolting young generation through the family of Professor Salih Bey. The story of Ali who realizes his existence through criticizing the wrong order on behalf of the poor gives the book a political dimension. The novel also includes a considerable number of observations on the changing face of Ankara. This study analyzes the novel's political discourse which involves the generation gap and the desire for change underlying Soysal's wish to connect the past to the present.
